Biography
Petro Poroshenko is a Ukrainian politician and statesman, the 5th President of Ukraine, who came to power against the backdrop of controversial and complex events in the country. Critics call him a tough pragmatist, a dodgy businessman, a successful businessman, but no one denies his ability to achieve this goal on his own.
fact
Childhood and youth
Poroshenko Petro Alekseevich was born on September 26, 1965 in the Ukrainian town of Bolgrad, located in the Odessa region near the border with Moldova. Poroshenko's parents were natives of the Izmail district of the Odessa region, which in the pre-war years was part of Romania.

The father of the future president of Ukraine, Aleksey Ivanovich, headed the department of agricultural machinery in Bolgrad. Mother Evgenia Sergeevna worked as a chief accountant. In the family, Peter was the youngest child, he had an 8-year-old elder brother Mikhail Poroshenko, who died in 1997 under mysterious circumstances.
The media have repeatedly reported that the real name of the future head of the Ukrainian state is Valtsman. Such information immediately became the basis for the emergence of rumors about the nationality of the Ukrainian leader.

At school, Peter showed interest in learning foreign languages, from the 1st grade he studied French. The father of the future Ukrainian leader had a tough disposition and raised his children according to strict principles. In 1974, the Poroshenko family moved to Moldova, to the city of Bender, where Petr Alekseevich successfully graduated from a local school.
After graduating from high school, the young man decided to become an economist-diplomat and went to Moscow to conquer the capital MGIMO. However, the provincial applicant failed to enter there because of the competition, as a result he decided to study international economics in Kiev. In the 3rd year of the university, Poroshenko was drafted into the army, after serving in Aktyubinsk, he nevertheless graduated from the university and received a red diploma in international economics.
fact
Business
Poroshenko's business dates back to his student years. In his youth, he created the Center-Service enterprise, whose activities were based on the conclusion and payment of contracts. Poroshenko's earnings then amounted to 1.5% of the transaction amount, but this allowed him to buy a Volga car in his 5th year of university. With the money he earned at Center-Service, Peter, together with his classmate Sergei Zaitsev, began to deal with scarce supplies of goods to the USSR. In particular, his craft was the supply of cocoa beans from Belgium and Holland to confectionery factories.
After the collapse of the Soviet Union, his skills in this business allowed Petr Alekseevich to take control of several confectionery factories that became the basis of his largest concern Roshen in Ukraine. The prosperous activity of the future president in business brought Pyotr Alekseevich a fortune, against which they began to call him the Chocolate King.
In addition to the Roshen chocolate empire, Poroshenko owns a large number of enterprises. His business includes several bus and automobile industries, a glassware factory, several starch enterprises, the Leninskaya Kuznya shipyard, the Kraina insurance company, two sports and recreation complexes, but the production business in the Poroshenko corporation's portfolio does not belong to him entirely.
The oligarch owns a number of media assets, including the Ukrainian Channel Five, KP Media, the Correspondent publication, radio stations Nashe Radio, Next, Retro FM, and Your Radio. From 1993 to 1998, he was also the CEO of the family company Ukrprominvest, which he founded together with his father and brother.
After the reorganization of the Poroshenko corporation in 2006, a diversified holding PJSC “Closed non-diversified corporate investment fund“ Prime Asset Capital ”” was created, 100% of which is owned by Petro Poroshenko. According to the financial and economic magazine Forbes, in 2014, the president of Ukraine, thanks to his fortune of $ 1.3 billion, took the 6th position among the richest citizens of the country. But a year later, this figure was almost halved and amounted to $ 750 million.
It soon became known that the president’s business was not sold, but “hidden” on the territory of the Russian Federation, despite the fact that Pyotr Alekseevich had repeatedly referred to Russia as an “aggressor”.
The Ukrainian society was outraged by the fact that the Roshen factory was still operating in Russia. In Lipetsk, the confectionery enterprise is successfully operating, despite the statements and promises of the Ukrainian leader to close this concern.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly stated that he welcomes the work of this company on Russian territory, since the company regularly pays taxes to the Russian treasury.
fact
Politics
In 1998, the biography of Petro Poroshenko acquired another direction, and he got into politics, which from his student years was his dream. Then Petro Alekseevich became a deputy of the Verkhovna Rada as part of the Social Democratic Party of Ukraine. Having devoted 2 years to it, he left the ranks of the SDPU against the background of a conflict with its leaders Georgy Surkis and Viktor Medvedchuk and created his own faction "Solidarity", which in the future became the "Party of Solidarity of Ukraine".

In 2000, after the unification of 5 political organizations, the Labor Solidarity of Ukraine party was created, in which Poroshenko became one of the co-chairs. In 2001, it was renamed into the Party of Regions, headed by ex-Prime Minister of Ukraine Mykola Azarov.
In 2001, Petro Poroshenko left the ranks of the Party of Regions, supporting Viktor Yushchenko, he led the election campaign of a new candidate in the presidential race. With Viktor Yushchenko, Petr Alekseevich walked hand in hand until the victorious "Maidan-2004", not suspecting that victory would not bring him personal political growth. After Yushchenko was elected president of Ukraine, Yulia Tymoshenko took the post of prime minister, and Poroshenko got the post of NSDC secretary.

In 2005, Pyotr Alekseevich and a number of other officials were dismissed by the ex-president of Ukraine as a result of a scandal associated with multiple accusations of Yushchenko's entourage of corruption and lobbying of their own interests.
In 2009, Poroshenko was elected foreign minister and re-entered the Ukrainian NSDC. A year later, after the victory of the leader of the Party of Regions, Viktor Yanukovych, in the presidential elections, Poroshenko was again dismissed, giving up his place in the government to Konstantin Grishchenko.

In 2012, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych approved Petro Poroshenko as Minister of Economy of Ukraine. But he did not stay at the head of the Ministry of Economic Development of the Ukrainian state for long - after winning the 2012 parliamentary elections and returning to parliament, Poroshenko was removed from his post. However, he refused to join any faction in the Verkhovna Rada.
A year later, at Maidan-2013, Pyotr Alekseevich took an active position in the protesters' camp, sponsoring Euromaidan with food, water and firewood. He tried not to hold on to the first positions along with the famous ex-boxer Vitali Klitschko, as well as MPs Oleg Tyagnibok and Arseniy Yatsenyuk, which, most likely, helped him get the long-awaited victory and reach the top of Ukrainian politics.
fact
President of Ukraine
During the events associated with Euromaidan, Petro Poroshenko won popular recognition for his participation in the most critical situations of that time. This allowed him to win the 2014 elections after the overthrow of Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych. He proved himself to be a politician not inclined to extremism and radicalism, thanks to which the Ukrainians gave him more than 50% of the vote, and in the first round of the presidential race. As a result, Petro Poroshenko became the 5th President of Ukraine.

According to the new president of Ukraine chosen by the Ukrainians, pronounced by him at the inauguration on June 7, 2014, his goals at the highest post of the Ukrainian government were to preserve the unity of the country and return Crimea to Ukraine. At the same time, Poroshenko promised the population to take enhanced measures to provide Ukrainians with a visa-free regime to Europe, and also gave hope that Ukraine will become part of the European Union.
From the very first days, Poroshenko's presidency changed the opinion of Ukrainians about him, in connection with which he lost allies who considered him a humanist, business executive, intellectual and principled politician. Less than a month after he took the presidency, he decided by far from peaceful means to overcome the protests of the population of the southeast of the country, sending the Ukrainian army there. As a result of the military conflict in Donbass, according to official information from the OSCE, more than 6 thousand civilians and tens of thousands of security officials were killed.

These figures did not confuse the government of the country, and even after the signing of the peace agreement in Minsk, Kiev continued to make attempts to return Donbass, which is confirmed by numerous violations of the ceasefire in the territories of the southeast controlled by the militia, which was recorded by international observers.
Despite the fact that during the rule of Pyotr Alekseevich, negotiations were held in the "Normandy format", there was no concrete result. The hostilities continued, and the society accused the head of Ukraine of an interest in receiving additional dividends and economic benefits due to the war.

Western media have repeatedly informed that the US authorities do not want to maintain this state of affairs. In February 2017, Poroshenko met with Donald Trump, the President of the United States, at which the parties discussed ways to resolve the military conflict in Donbass. In 2016, European politicians have repeatedly stated the need to revise the concept and approach to solutions that will help stop hostilities in eastern Ukraine.
It was Poroshenko who laid the burden of responsibility for the failures in the military conflict in Donbass, the currency collapse, the economic catastrophe in Ukraine. He did not fulfill any of his promises during his ascension to the presidency of Ukraine, replacing freedom of speech in the state with “pseudo-patriotism”, and social payments and budgetary salaries with payments for an IMF loan.
fact
Personal life
The personal life of Pyotr Alekseevich, in contrast to his political career, is stable and reliable. While still a student, he met his future wife Marina Perevedentseva, the daughter of the Deputy Minister of Health of the Ukrainian SSR. Poroshenko's wife is a cardiologist by profession, who later took up charity work, heading the Petro Poroshenko Charitable Foundation.

During the years of marriage, four children were born in the family of the 5th President of Ukraine: son Alexey, twin daughters Alexander and Yevgeny, whose godfather was the ex-President of Ukraine Viktor Yushchenko, and son Mikhail. In 2014, Marina and Petro Poroshenko had a grandson, Peter, and a granddaughter, Elizabeth, who were presented to them by their eldest son, Alexey. The younger heirs of the head of state now live and study abroad.
Petro Poroshenko also gained fame as the head of state who does not follow the neatness of his wardrobe. He was repeatedly seen at important meetings in crumpled suits. Sometimes jackets and trousers on Pyotr Alekseevich, who has a large figure (with a height of 180 cm, his weight reaches 93 cm), looked baggy at all. Photos of the slovenly dressed head of Ukraine often found their way into international media and on Instagram pages. Poroshenko himself has repeatedly emphasized that he prefers Louis Vuitton clothing, and considers the style of French President Emmanuel Macron to be the standard of taste for himself.

Petro Poroshenko now
In the spring of 2018, the President of Ukraine made an official appeal to the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I with a request to grant autocephaly to the Orthodox Church in Ukraine. Petr Alekseevich made this decision not alone, but together with the hierarchs of the UOC-KP. Constantinople gave a positive response to the head of Ukraine, and soon the procedure for granting a tomos was launched.

Poroshenko informed his followers on Facebook and Twitter about this event. In the light of anti-Russian rhetoric, Petr Alekseevich called this procedure "the triumph of Orthodoxy" and "an act of deep restoration of historical justice." The diploma of independence of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church was presented to Metropolitan Epiphanius on January 6, 2019.
In the spring of 2018, the actions of Petro Poroshenko provoked a tense situation in the water area of the Azov Sea. The Ukrainian side detained the seamen of the Russian ship "Nord" under the pretext of violating the Ukrainian border crossing rules.
In turn, the Russian side began a more biased inspection of Ukrainian ships. In November, the situation worsened after the arrest of three ships belonging to the Ukrainian naval service. After the incident, Poroshenko called Moscow's actions aggression and temporarily introduced martial law in the regions bordering the Sea of Azov.

The main event of 2019 in the country's political life was the regular presidential elections. At the end of January, Petro Poroshenko registered his candidacy in the list of candidates for the presidency.
His main rivals were Yulia Tymoshenko, leader of the Batkivshchyna party, self-nominated candidate Yuriy Boyko, representative of Civic Position Anatoly Gritsenko, and Servant of the People party candidate Volodymyr Zelensky. The latter figure - a popular comedian and producer in Ukraine and Russia - was not initially seen as a competitor. But soon Zelensky sensationally emerged as the leader of the election race.

In his program, Poroshenko relied on further rapprochement with the European Union and applying for EU membership until 2024. Since in domestic politics, Pyotr Alekseevich actually suffered a fiasco, he used leverage over the electorate supporting the autocephaly of the Ukrainian Church.
Nevertheless, after the 1st round of voting, it became known that Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Petro Poroshenko became the leaders of the race, and the first contender overtook the incumbent in votes almost 2 times (30.24% versus 15.95% of the votes). The second round was scheduled for April 21, 2019.
During pre-election meetings with voters, the president emphasized that he would agree with any choice of the people and, if defeated, would remain in politics. He plans, together with his fellow party members from Solidarity, to take a seat in parliament, where he will express the opinion of the opposition.

On April 19, on the eve of the decisive round, a debate between Poroshenko and Zelensky took place at the arena of the national sports complex "Olympic". Before the meeting, on the initiative of Vladimir Aleksandrovich, both candidates passed tests for the presence of prohibited substances in the blood of each. In Russia, the debates of the Ukrainian presidential candidates were broadcast on the Komsomolskaya Pravda radio, a video version of their speech was shown on the Russia 24 TV channel and the RT website.
According to the Exit poll, Volodymyr Zelenskyy became the winner of the second round of elections, gaining 72-73% of the vote against 25-26% of Petro Poroshenko. The incumbent president managed to get ahead of his rival only in the Lviv region and at the overseas polling station in Australia. In recent days, before the official inauguration of the new head of state, Pyotr Alekseevich plans to sign a law on the use of the Ukrainian language as the state language.
