Biography
Actor, director, screenwriter, producer, Peter Berg is a jack of all trades. A drama graduate from Macalester College in Minneapolis, he first performed in several plays, including "Flibberty Gibbet" and "Le Tartuffe". Berg takes his first steps on the big screen in a small comedy, Never on Tuesday (1989). Very early on, having the possibility of working both in cinema and on television, he multiplied small roles, in productions which have mostly remained unseen in France. We find it in the horrific Shocker by Wes Craven (1989), but also in a successful series like 21 Jump Street. In 1994, he won the performance of a young man manipulated by Linda Fiorentino in the thriller Last Seduction, but also in that of a violent and crooked policeman in Copland (1997).
As comfortable in front of as behind the camera, he wrote and directed in 1994 several episodes of the series Chicago Hope, of which he also played for three seasons the role of Doctor Billy Kronk. Four years later, he directed his first feature film, the black comedy Very bad things, where he directed Cameron Diaz, Jon Favreau and Christian Slater. You then have to wait five more years to find him behind the camera, with Welcome to the Jungle. In this action comedy, two adventurers (The Rock and Seann William Scott) wander through the Amazon rainforest and fight against the cruel manager of a gold mine (Christopher Walken).
In 2004, Peter Berg signed the first great success of his career: Friday Night Lights. This story of a small Texan town that crystallizes the hope of getting out of it on its football team is shown both in cinema and on television in a series of the same name. Praised by the public and the critics, the show won three Emmy Awards (best performance for its entire cast, best actor for Kyle Chandler and best screenplay for the final episode). If he continued to play actors during the 2000s (notably with Michael Mann with Collateral or with his friend Joe Carnahan with Mi $ e à prix), Peter Berg seems to evolve towards more committed artistic choices, as evidenced by The Kingdom and his participation in Lions and Lambs, two films set against the backdrop of
This position does not prevent it from becoming a sure bet in Hollywood. With Hancock (2008), Peter Berg reaches the heights of the box office. The blockbuster collects 625 million dollars in the world and offers Will Smith a comic and action role in which he excels: that of a disillusioned superhero, worn on the bottle. With this financial success, Peter Berg was entrusted, in 2012, with the reins of Battleship, an explosive alien invasion film inspired by the board game Touché-coulé.. Unfortunately, the film is a flop. Still not discouraged, Peter returned two years later with a more personal film that he even wanted to make before Battleship: Blood and Tears carried by Mark Wahlberg, Emile Hirsch, Ben Foster and his favorite actor Taylor Kitsch. The actors slip into the skin of four Navy trapped during Operation "Red Wing" which aimed to locate the Taliban leader Ahmad Shah in June 2005.
He then re-teamed with Mark Wahlberg for Deepwater, which reconstitutes the largest ecological accident in the history of the United States, as well as Stalking in Boston focusing on the attacks that struck the city in 2013.
