Biography
The Pet Shop Boys team has a bright, distinctive image that has been cultivated throughout the project's existence. The group's tracks are about love and hate. And thanks to the paradoxical twists in the plots of the songs, the work of the duo is often called intellectual dance music. In life, the participants pay special attention to fashion trends - they are reflected in everyday looks, being an integral part of the stage image.
fact
Creation history and composition
By chance, in 1981, the paths of two young people, Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe, crossed paths in a London music store. This was the beginning of the biography and the starting point of the Pet Shop Boys project.
Neil Tennant, a historian and assistant editor for Smash Hits magazine, walked into the store for advice on connecting a synthesizer. Christopher Lowe, from a musical family who learned to play keyboards, was then studying architecture at university and agreed to help by picking up Neal's phone.
After 3 weeks, the young people met. Finding similar aspirations and common acceptance of dance music, Neil and Chris decided to join forces. At first, the collective was called the West End in honor of one of the elite areas of the British capital. But this name did not catch on, so it became necessary to come up with a new one. Pet Shop Boys was born in honor of friends of musicians who run a pet shop, with whom Chris spent the night while moving.

Music
The guys devoted their first few years to writing music. Since the beginning of the project's existence, they decided that they would be engaged in electronic music based on italo-disco and electro. But the dramatic meaning of the songs goes back to the style of traditional pop music. Musicians were particularly influenced by Giorgio Moroder, Bobby Orlando, Kraftwerk and New York club music.
The turning point in the fate of the band was 1983, when Tennant went as a correspondent to cover The Police tour in New York. On this trip, Neil met with producer Bobby Orlando, who agreed to record the young group. Soon the band's first singles - "West End Girls", "One More Chance" and "Opportunities" were released, but they did not achieve success. Then the band members terminated the contract with the producer, and in his place they invited Stephen Haig.
In the summer of 1985, the single "West End Girls" was reissued with a new producer via EMI Records. The fact that the appeal to Stephen was the right decision was confirmed by the success of the single, released in November of the same year. "West End Girls" took 1st place not only in the UK and USA. A year later, the debut album "Please" was released, hitting the TOP-10 of the album chart.
A year later, the second album called "Actually" was released. The next album, Introspective, released in 1988, was remixed, although all but one of the songs were new. An exception was the track "Always on My Mind", which appeared on MTV in August 1987.
The song is dedicated by the band members to the 10th anniversary of the death of Elvis Presley. This period is characterized by theatrical and costume clips, the apotheosis of which is considered participation in the filming of the film It Couldn't Happen Here. The members of the collective in their work cultivated remixes, made independently and given to DJs.
In the summer of 1989, the band went on tour for the first time. The group prepared for concerts meticulously and for a long time, employing avant-garde director and screenwriter Derek Jarman. Thanks to this, Pet Shop Boys' performances, which were formerly standard outlets for plus, were transformed into a theatrical event with decorations, dressing up and dancers.
From 1987 to 1989, the group released 7 singles, 3 of which took first places in the UK and Europe. In a 1996 interview, Tennant referred to this period as the "Empire of the Pet Shop Boys." Two years earlier, an important event took place in the musician's personal life. Tennant, giving an interview to the gay magazine Attitude, came out.
Due to Neal's orientation, he and Chris were often considered a couple, but in reality they are only close friends.
In the 90s, it seemed to the band members that the days of success were numbered, as their songs ceased to occupy the top lines. Therefore, Pet Shop Boys attempted to record the first concept album. Conceptualism consisted not of an idea or an essence, but of existing moods. The result of his labors was the material Behavior, which became an unexpected combination of synthesizers, chamber orchestra and guitar rhythms, framed by light motives of acid house. The work has earned positive reviews and reached the 2nd position of the British charts.
At this time, the collective was at the peak of creative activity: singles were released one after another, creative ties with performers developed. Pet Shop Boys embarked on a world tour that ran from March to June 1991. On tour, the team visited about 13 countries, not counting the UK. This period was marked by the release of an anthology of all singles called "Discography". Then the popularity of the group began to decline due to the explosion of grunge, which shifted the accents of the musical world.
Despite this, in 1993 the album "Very" was released, created as an antipode to the fourth work. Thanks to its incendiary dance motives, many consider this work to be the masterpiece of Eurodance of that period. The record won worldwide success, and the tracks were accompanied by innovative clips. The shooting of the world hit "Go West" partly took place in Moscow, where the musicians were photographed on Red Square.
Pet Shop Boys stopped often delighting fans with new records. After touring in Australia and Latin America, the band did not appear on stage for 3 years. After that, “Bilingual”, permeated with Latin rhythms, came out, and after another 3 years the musicians delighted the fans of “Nightlife”. The records were popular, but did not contain anything fundamentally new.
In 1998, Pet Shop Boys performed for the first time in Russia: in the capital with one concert and two in St. Petersburg. Then, on the border of two centuries, the collective toured the world with short breaks.
The next LP, Pet Shop Boys, surprised fans with the electronic-acoustic genre of music. The album Release broke with the typical synth-pop sound and caused a desire to draw a parallel with Behavior: in both, Johnny Marr was behind the guitar.
The forthcoming discs "Disco", "PopArt" and "Fundamental" were popular with the fans of the group. The last of them marked a return to the previous dance format. This was followed by another collection of remixes Disco 4, where mixes were recorded on the tracks of other artists: among them Yoko Ono, Rammstein and others. The disc caused discontent among fans, because, in their opinion, there was nothing new on it.
Apparently, taking into account the opinion of the fans, in 2008 Tennant and Lowe started writing tracks for the future album. The following year, at the Brit Awards, the duo were awarded for their outstanding contribution to the development of world music.
In March 2009, the 10th anniversary album "Yes" was released, in which the Xenomania project took part. The work reached No. 4 in the UK and was a success throughout Europe. The musicians went on another world tour, the setlist of which was called Pandemonium Tour.
Two years later, an album entitled "The Most Incredible Thing" was released, timed to coincide with the premiere of a ballet production based on the work of the same name by Hans Christian Andersen. Neil and Chris began work on the musical score for the ballet in 2008.
The following material is the 11th studio album "Elisium", which received positive reviews from critics who emphasized the softness of the sound and the lyrical elements. In contrast to this work, the 12th album was released, which is a dance recording.
In 2016, Pet Shop Boys embarked on a world tour with new material called "Super". At the end of the same year, the duet members visited Ivan Urgant's TV program, where they guessed the names of Russian musical groups.

Pet Shop Boys now
Now the composition of the collective has not changed, and Pet Shop Boys continues to delight fans with creativity. In a special image of the group, Tennant plays the role of a dandy, while Lowe is an adherent of a sports style. Chris acts in a detached image, which is enhanced by sunglasses, which have hardly been removed since the 90s.
The duo announced a concert in Hungary on August 24, 2018. This summer the band performed in Great Britain, Finland, Spain, Sweden and Estonia.
The Pet Shop Boys group has an official account on the Instagram social network, where members post photos and videos of events taking place in their lives.
