Childhood and youth
Paula Julie Abdul was born in San Fernando, California on June 19, 1962. Her father, Harry Abdul, is from the Jewish community of Aleppo, grew up in Brazil, immigrated to the United States as a young man, where he first sold livestock, and then became the owner of a gravel and sand business.
Mother, concert pianist Lorraine Raikis, a Canadian native with Russian and Ukrainian roots, worked as an assistant to director and screenwriter Billy Wilder, known for the films Only Girls in Jazz and Gentle Irma. The family broke up when the future star was small, the mother alone raised Paula and her older sister Wendy.
From an early age, the girl loved to dance. Inspired by Gene Kelly's performances in Singing in the Rain, she began taking ballet, tap and jazz lessons. She studied at Van Nuys Secondary School, was an excellent student, a member of the school team support group.
At 15, Abdul received a scholarship to a choreographic camp near Palm Springs, and in 1978 she starred in the low-budget independent music film High School.
After high school, Paula studied radio broadcasting at California State University. In her first year, she qualified for the Los Angeles Lakers basketball team's cheerleaders. Within a year, she became the main choreographer of the professional cheerleading team.

Creation
Abdul got into show business after the members of the famous team "The Jacksons" saw her performance at a basketball game. This was a key moment in her biography. The girl was invited to shoot the band's video for the song "Torture" as a dance director. Paula was very worried showing the Jackson brothers how to move. The success of the choreography in the video led Paula to continue collaborating with musicians and actors.
Paula's best-known works are Janet Jackson's ballet for her videos "Nasty" and "Control", numbers for The Jacksons show titled "Victory", and choreography for a scene from the movie "Big" where Tom Hanks dances on a giant piano keyboard.
Soon, Paula decided to step out of the shadow of the stars she collaborated with and start a singing career. It turned out that Abdul, an experienced dancer and choreographer, had poor vocal abilities. The girl had to work a lot with teachers to develop a vocal range, defined as mezzo-soprano.
In 1987, at her own expense, Paul recorded a demo disc, which the founder of Virgin Records liked. Abdul signed a contract with the studio and recorded the album "Forever Your Girl", released in 1988.
It was one of the most successful debuts of the late 1980s. The album climbed to the top of the American charts, held 1st place in the Billboard 200 chart for 10 weeks, the album set a record for the number of singles released, and received a platinum certificate in the USA.
At the 32nd Grammy Awards, Abdul won her first nomination for Best Video for the song "Opposites Attract," in which a dark-skinned beauty Paula dances on the streets and rooftops with a cartoon cat.
Another hit from the 1st album of Paula Abdul was the song "Straight Up". She gained popularity thanks to a black and white video, directed by David Fincher and directed by the singer herself. The video received 4 MTV Video Music Awards: Best Female Video, Best Editing, Best Choreography and Best Dance Video.
In 1991, Yvette Marin, backing vocalist for Forever Your Girl, filed a lawsuit against Abdul and the Virgin label, claiming that she sang most of the songs on the album. The court sided with the defendants and ruled in their favor 2 years later.
In 1991, Paula Abdul's 2nd studio album, Spellbound, was released, which repeated the success of the previous one: 7 million copies were sold worldwide. The album retained its dance character, complemented by R & B elements. The ballad "Rush Rush", in the video for which Keanu Reeves starred, became the 1st single for the album. After the release of the disc, the singer gave concerts in the USA, Canada and Asian countries as part of the Under My Spell tour.
In the same year, Paula starred in a popular Diet Coke commercial in which she danced with a digital image of her idol Gene Kelly. The singer was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in December 1991.
In 1995, after a hiatus, Abdul recorded her third studio album, "Head over Heels," which peaked at # 18 on the Billboard 200 in the United States and later became the best-selling release. Paula sang the lead single of the album "My Love Is for Real" with the singer Ofra Haza. In 1995, Abdul released a hip-hop dance workout video called Paula Abdul's Get Up and Dance!
Two years later, Paula co-wrote a song called "Spinning Around" with producer and composer Cara Diogardi, which was to be the single off her new album. For personal reasons, Abdul did not release the disc, and the song was recorded by Kylie Minogue.
In 1997-1999, Abdul starred in the ABC television film Touch of Evil as a businesswoman who discovers that her boyfriend is a serial rapist. In parallel with filming, she released Cardio Dance, the 2nd workout video, and choreographed several film and theater productions, including the musical Reefer Madness (1998) and American Beauty (1999).
In 2000, Virgin Records released the first of the singer's two compilations, Paula Abdul: Greatest Hits, and the second, Greatest Hits: Straight Up !, was released in 2007. In 2002, Paula Abdul continued her career in television. She became a judge and mentor on the popular young artist show American Idol, and then as a reporter for the Entertainment Tonight program.
In 2007, the personal life of the singer and TV presenter was shown in the reality show "Hey, Paul". The behavior of the star in some episodes caused a negative reaction from critics and the public, the project was canceled after the 1st season.
In 2008, after a 13-year hiatus, Abdul released the single "Dance Like theres No Tomorrow", which became the first track on the album Randy Jackson's Music Club Vol. 1". Fans hoped the singer had started work on a new disc, but this was not the case. A year later, the pop star of the 90s recorded the last song to date, "I'm Just Here for the Music", which she presented on the radio and in the American Idol project.
Since 2010, Paula has acted as a judge in various projects on television - "Live to Dance", "The X Factor", "Dancing with the Stars", "So You Think You Can Dance" and others, starred in television series as a guest star ...
On August 6, 2016 at the Mixtape Festival in Pennsylvania, Paula Abdul performed for the first time in 26 years as a singer with a full set. A year earlier, the American band New Kids on the Block announced a joint tour with the 90s pop star and Boyz II Men.

There were many men in Paula Abdul's life. At the beginning of her career, she dated the American comedian Arsenio Hall, then her boyfriend was John Stamos, the star of the TV series "Ambulance". In 1991, the singer met the actor Emilio Estevez. On April 29, 1992, young people got married and stayed together for 2 years.
The divorce coincided with other difficulties in Paula's life, the main one of which was a health problem. Abdul suffered from an eating disorder since childhood, which intensified when she became a pop star. I had to go to doctors for treatment for bulimia.
In 1996, the singer met her 2nd husband, fashion designer Brad Beckerman. The wedding took place in Bristol, Connecticut. After 17 months of marriage, on March 10, 1998, the couple divorced, citing irreconcilable differences. Paula did not have children in any marriage.
In April 2005, Abdul revealed that she suffers from a neurological disorder, reflex sympathetic dystrophy, which causes chronic pain. This disease is also known as Zudeck's syndrome (complex regional pain syndrome).
Paula has repeatedly suffered from violent acts by the opposite sex. In April 2006, Abdul filed a complaint with the Hollywood police station, claiming that she was the victim of an attack at a private party: an unknown man grabbed her by the arm and threw her against the wall. According to the singer, she received a concussion and spinal injuries.
In 2011, on Valentine's Day, Paula had a falling out with her lover on an estate in Santa Barbara. The singer called the rescue service, as the man locked her in the house and threatened to kill her if she reported to the police.
Another shock for Abdul was the suicide of an audition participant for American Idol. In November 2008, 30-year-old Paula Goodspeed was found dead in a car near the singer's house in Los Angeles, surrounded by photos and CDs of the star. After this incident, the singer could not be at home for a long time, stayed with friends or spent the night at a hotel.
The celebrity did not put an end to her personal life, in 2008-2010 she met with British TV presenter Simon Cowell, but never married again. Paula believes that marriage is not for her. The main thing in life is “to find a friend with whom there will be close spiritual contact”, love and respect that does not depend on “a piece of paper in which it is written that someone is your legal spouse”.
