ONUKA is a Ukrainian group whose work is based on a mixture of folk instruments and electronic processing. With an unusual sound, the team conquered not only compatriots, but also Europe: the video for the song Vidlik, dedicated to the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, was included in the short list of the fashion film festival in Berlin.

The ideological inspirer, the author of most of the texts and music, the way the ONUKA group is presented on the stage is Natalya Aleksandrovna Zhizhchenko, known in creative circles as Nata Zhizhchenko.

The girl was born into a family of musicians. Her grandfather, a master of folk instruments Alexander Nikitovich Shlenchik, was the first to take up the musical education of his granddaughter. Thanks to him, at the age of 4, the girl was already playing the sopilka. Grandmother is a singer and bandura player, mother and uncle are pianists. Only his father, liquidator of the consequences of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, did not distinguish himself with creative skills.

The biography of Natalia Zhizhchenko in musical terms was developing successfully. For 11 years she sang in the Tomato Jaws trio, based on the idea of ​​her brother Alexander. Despite the growing popularity of the group, in 2013 the girl decided to leave the project and take up solo work. During this period, the history of ONUKA creation began.

The name of the group ("onuka" - Ukrainian "granddaughter") is a tribute to the memory of Alexander Shlyonchik, Nata's way of saying thank you for his musical education. The collective revives old traditions, and the sound uses classical folk instruments bandura, sopilka and others.

The group has two variants of composition. In the classical style, the soloist Nata plays wind instruments (sopilka, ocarina), processes the sound on the omnicord, Maria Sorokina is responsible for the drums, and backing vocalist Daria Sert owns keyboards.

At concerts, ONUKA often performs in an expanded lineup, which includes 11 musicians. They are responsible for the "nationality", play the bandura, calf, cymbals, jew's harp, trombone, trembita, Cossack trumpet and French horn. In some performances, only Evgeny Yovenko joins the girls (trombone, French horn, bandura, bull, telinka).

Look is the first song created by ONUKA in October 2013. In the same year, the leader of the Ukrainian electronic rock group The Maneken Yevgeny Filatov, a good friend of Nata Zhyzhchenko, helped the girls to shoot their debut video. It wasn't until mid-2014 that ONUKA first appeared on stage as an opening act for The Maneken.

In October 2014, the group released their debut album ONUKA online. It includes 10 tracks, including those already known to Ukrainian listeners Look, Around Me, When I Met U, Time.

The collection bypassed Okean Elzy in the number of downloads from iTunes in the performers' home country. The gentle vocals and electro-folk music are also appreciated in Japan. Nata Zhizhchenko suggested that the popularity abroad is due to the consonance of the group's name with one of the stations of the Japanese metro.

In the work on the album, Natu Zhizhchenko was supported by Evgeny Filatov. The lyrics in English and Ukrainian were created by the girl, and the leader of The Maneken acted as a composer and sound producer, he also played drums, bass and keyboards.

The mixing of the two languages ​​in the album was deliberate so that not only Ukraine would remember the sound of native folk instruments, but also the Europeans would get acquainted with the original culture of this country. Ukrainian hosting Cultprostir called ONUKA a breakthrough of 2014, and awarded the album of the same name the title of the best.

Natu Zhizhchenko, daughter of the liquidator of the Chernobyl disaster, was interested in the causes and consequences of this accident from childhood. The diploma work of the vocalist was devoted to the impact of the explosion on the nature of Polesie. In the mini-album Vidlik, released in 2016 on the label of the same name, the girl returned to her favorite topic again.

The collection includes 5 compositions. The track "19 86" uses recordings of firefighters' conversations on the day of the accident, but the most famous song was Vidlik (Ukrainian "countdown"). By the way, this very word is engraved on the inside of the wedding rings of Nata Zhizhchenko and Yevgeny Filatov.

The video for this song shows a man surrounded by the consequences of the largest accident in the history of nuclear power. In 2018, the video was shortlisted for the Berlin Fashion Film Festival in 4 nominations - Best New Artist, Best Music Video, Production Designer and Styling. More than 20 images, dozens of specially created art objects were used in the shooting. The director was Anna Buryachkova.

In 2017, the Eurovision Song Contest was held in Kiev. Before the announcement of the winners, ONUKA together with the orchestra of folk instruments, NAONI presented the audience with a mix of their tracks. Guests from other countries noted that the group performed several times better than the competitors from Ukraine O. Torvald.

Mozaїka's second studio album was released in March 2018. Nata Zhizhchenko explains the name as follows: the life of every person, like a mosaic, consists of memories, experiences, coincidences. For example, a vocalist's jigsaw puzzle is made up of stories about loved ones and performers who inspire her, as well as world catastrophes and wars.

Zhizhchenko was inspired to create the Vsesvit track by an accidentally found recording of talks between two cosmonauts during the flight. One of them said:

Therefore, the song tells about inner freedom, overcoming difficulties and problems that put pressure on a person.

The STRUM song is dedicated to Zhyzhchenko's grandmother, "Khto" - to ONUKA sound producer Evgeny Filatov. Arka was written during a week-long practice of the soloist at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant: the girl witnessed the installation of a dome over an exploded power unit.

The most problematic track of the album was the track Guns Do Not Shoot, which claims that it is not a weapon that shoots, but a person. On the cover of the single, in addition to the usual types of weapons - stones, sticks, rifles and grenades, veiled symbols are depicted: atom, alcohol, cigarettes, Internet.

In September 2018, ONUKA, in collaboration with Alan Badoev, released a video for the song STRUM. It raises the environmental problem of environmental pollution. The performers are planning to donate funds received from showing the video on Youtube to the Ukraine Without Garbage organization.

Album Mozaїka was nominated for the Ukrainian music award YUNA-2019 in the Best Album nomination.

At the end of 2018, ONUKA recorded the track "Khashi" (Ukrainian "thickets"). Probably, it will be included in the next, third album, but there is no information about whether work on its release is currently underway.
