Biography

The frontman of the British rock band "Bring Me The Horizon" Oliver Sykes founded the band as a teenager, fulfilled a childhood dream - to play heavy rock. The success of the band at home was undulating: the guys were called both the best and the worst group of Britain. But Sykes' failures did not upset, but only provoked to scandalous antics. The musician is known for defiant behavior and shocking image: the whole body of a young man is completely covered with tattoos (over 50 images).

fact

Childhood and adolescence

Oliver Sykes was born on November 20, 1986, in Ashford, United Kingdom. His father is Ian Sykes, an entrepreneur, and his mother is Carol Sykes. Immediately after his birth, his parents went to Australia, where they also moved from place to place because of work. The family returned to Britain when their son was about 8 years old and settled in Sheffield, where the boy spent his childhood.

Oliver attended school in Stockbridge, the teenager liked more humanities - literature, languages, art. Here, he admitted, began a fascination with music. The school in Stockbridge is famous for alumni-musicians - Alex Turner and Matt Helder from "Arctic Monkeys" also studied here, being a year older than Sykes. After graduating, he continued his education at Barnsley College.

In 2003, the young man decided that his passion for music was more serious than just a hobby. He began to write tracks under the name of zuakebeat. He performed with his brother Tom in the hip-hop group "Womb 2 Da Tomb", then was already a vocalist in the team "Purple Curto".

Music

In 2004, Oliver formed his own band, Bring Me the Horizon, to perform his favorite metal. As the name for the band Sykes borrowed a quote from Jack Sparrow from "Pirates of the Caribbean." And it became happy for the guys - they immediately went uphill. Alternative music was at the peak of popularity at that time, and even the demo album of the new band "Bedroom Sessions" was received by the listener with great interest.

It took Sykes and the company two years to present their debut studio album, "Count your Blessings" (2006), which the audience and critics took "to cheers". Sykes' original vocals, based on the skrim technique, intrigued rock musicians against the backdrop of a darkly heavy sound. The band and its leader were even presented with the "Kerrang!" rock magazine award as "Britain's Best Newcomers 2006".

The successful debut turned the head of the "Bring Me the Horizon" frontman. In 2007, during a tour of the UK, in Nottingham, a big scandal erupted: Sykes was accused of urinating on one of the fans after the performance, and then attacking her. Oliver and the band's label denied this, but a criminal case was brought against the singer. After two court hearings over the course of a year, none of which Sykes pleaded not guilty to, the case was dropped and the musician was cleared of charges.

Between concerts, the first tour and the shooting of clips Sykes with the guys are working on creating songs for the new album. The album called "Suicide Season" was recorded in Sweden and released in the United States and Europe in 2008. The album was so successful that a year later Oli, as his fans now call it, realized the original idea - organized a remix of the disc with the participation of famous musicians.

The band's third super-long album, "There Is a Hell, Believe Me I've Seen It." There Is a Heaven, Let's Keep It a Secret" was released on October 4, 2010. In it, Oliver's vocal exercises became even more soulful, and the sound of the album was significantly different from the earlier works, becoming more gothic. The new album was number one on the Australian chart, peaking at number 17 on the Billboard 200 in the United States and winning the UK indie chart.

Attention to the music of the "Bings" fuels a new incident involving the scandalous Sykes. This time, fans of the band were outraged that Oli was beaten by the soloist of the group "Architects" Sam Carter. The video of the massacre was posted on YouTube and was viewed by thousands of people. Carter was threatened, some wanted to draw the attention of the authorities. And then Oliver and Sam had to make a statement in the interview that the video was just a "foolish prank."

Sykes also repeatedly provoked the quarrel or aggression of American rocker Andy Birsak, calling him a clown for the abundance of makeup on his face. And at every opportunity let go vulgar jokes. However, Birsak had the wisdom not to react to the provocateur.

In 2014, Oliver made a serious confession that largely explains his inappropriate behavior: all the while he used drugs, in particular ketamine. This addiction brought him so far that before committing suicide remained only a step. But, he said, the musician saved the love of devoted fans.

Sykes never let fans question the quality of his work. The fourth album "Sempiternal", released in 2013, critics call a breakthrough in the work of "Bringes". In it became clearly audible electronic bias, which gave the music of the guys a more elegant sound. Musicians become headliners of prestigious rock festivals, tracks lead the charts.

The new album "That's the Spirit" was released in 2015. Then Oliver and his team went on a tour of the U.S. and Australia, where their creativity is loved no less than at home.

As it became known, Oli from childhood dreamed of the glory of the designer. And as soon as the financial opportunities were allowed, the guy began to develop his own clothing line under the brand "Drop Dead Clothing". The artist creates mainly sports and casual-style clothes, which young people adore.

The success of the brand has crossed the borders of Britain and is gaining popularity in the international market. Today it is a well-established company, organizing delivery around the world, focusing on online sales.

Another facet of Oliver's talent is writing. In 2013, the musician, along with another designer, launched a kickstarter campaign to raise funds for his graphic novel, "Grown by Predators." Within a few weeks of launch, the site had collected just under 40,000. Pounds.
