Like many other Russian-speaking science fiction writers (Alexander Mazin, Marina and Sergey Dyachenko), Olga Gromyko was born in Ukraine. However, the author of “The Year of the Rat” and “The Wayfarer” is half-jokingly, half-seriously called “the great Belarusian writer”, since she has been living in Minsk since the age of 6. On the Internet, it is sometimes stated that the real name of the prose writer is Zaitsev, but the woman denies these rumors.
Gromyko is reluctant to share the pages of an early biography, preferring that family secrets remain behind the curtain. The sources indicate different dates of birth of the writer - then 13, then 14 September. Olga jokes that she was born exactly at midnight, as befits a witch. It happened in 1978 in Vinnitsa.
The parents of the future writer owned a personal library, in which classics predominated, but Olya saw them less often than reading books than watching TV or flipping through magazines. The girl began to read at the age of 2, and from the age of 4 she mastered the technique of “reading to oneself”. In an interview, Gromyko claims that from childhood she believed that the authors in vain offend evil spirits. Olga and her sister visited the "children's room" in Vinnitsa - a creative studio located in the basement of an apartment building, where children sculpted, painted, played checkers and put on performances.
After the family moved to the capital of Belarus, Gromyko spent her holidays in the village with relatives, where she saw all the stages of rabbit breeding. The refrigerator filled with the heads of eared rodents in the story "Soup" is not the author's fantasy.
At the age of 14, the girl got acquainted with books in the fantasy genre and after reading the works of Sapkovsky and Perumov she began to compose herself. The readers of Olya's first opuses were her friends. However, Gromyko did not even think about a literary career at that time, she got a job as a laboratory assistant at a research institute and went to Minsk University for a "serious specialty."
Olga is a colleague of the Russian woman Valentina Savenko both in the genre of literature and in her university specialization: writers are biologists. Gromyko managed to work not only at an institute researching microorganisms, but also to obtain the qualification of a gas electric welder (the completion of these courses was necessary for certification of the laboratory). Olga also has six days of experience working as a janitor, who, as the writer ironically notes, helps in creating images of witches with brooms.
An aspiring writer who can professionally model bizarre biological organisms and skillfully describe fire-breathing dragons, creating the novel "Profession: Witch", she was sure that the work would be published. And she was not mistaken: the book was published, and it won two prizes. Now Gromyko's income, according to her, is equivalent to that of a middle manager.

In Olga's books, robots and evil spirits often turn out to be more sincere than people. This is the case in Gromyko's early story "Falling Leaves", and in a work written by an experienced hand - "Kitten". The author assures that when creating the story about the cat, Mickey did not shed a tear, she was accustomed to the deaths of her pet rats, and cats seem to her surprisingly long-lived rats.
The writer deliberately did not make cats the main characters of her novels, realizing that this technique had already been beaten in literature. However, in Gromyko's bibliography there is a work that has become a hit on the Internet, which is called "Stroke the Cat" - this is a humorous poem about unpleasant surprises awaiting buyers Pushkov and Barsikov. Alas, Olga rarely writes poetry - only when, according to the writer, “someone else's muse is flying by with her.”

Experts say that it is better to start acquaintance with Gromyko's prose with a cycle about the witch Volha Rednoy, in which Belarus, Russia and Ukraine with their peculiarities and contradictions are encrypted under the mask with the names of Beloria, Volmeria and Vinesa. Then it is worth reading "Faithful Enemies" and "Kamaleinik Flower".
Gromyko recommends to novice authors:
read a lot and write a lot (write 50 author's sheets - 2 million characters, then throw everything away and start writing with a confident hand); to publish 3-4 books a year (although Olga herself usually takes a year to create a work, and for another six months she lives written, unable to switch to something new); combine books in a series; promote works on social networks and maintain friendly communication with readers.

Gromyko has a negative attitude towards co-authorship (the lady wrote the works "Plus for Minus" and "Cosmobiolukha" together with Andrei Ulanov, a resident of Riga, but claims that the man quickly lost interest in the idea, and Olga had to redo more than half of what he wrote) and film adaptation in Russian-Belarusian conditions their works.
In the "Live Journal" of the writer there is a story about how the Minsk film studio offered to shoot a cartoon based on her book, but to do it on a budget, reducing the number of heroes from 50 to 7 and introducing a talking horse among them. Than such "adaptations" - their absence is better, says Olga. Therefore, there are no films based on the works of Gromyko.
The writer’s husband’s name is Alexander, he is a Belarusian politician and tells Olga in the elections whom to vote for. On the page in "Live Journal" Gromyko, the man appears as Sashiy, but the writer does not publish his spouse's surname and does not publish his spouse's photo in public records.
There is conflicting information on the Internet about whether the husband reads Olga's works: sometimes it is said that he not only reads, but also advises the author on battle scenes, and sometimes - that he does not open fiction in principle, but loves books on economics, history and political science.
In early interviews, Olga stated that she wants to have two children. However, so far the writer has one child - a boy whom she gave birth to in 2004 and whose name will not be made public. From infancy, Gromyko read folk tales to her son, but she admits that now the son does not like to read.
In 2014, the family moved from the apartment to their own house, not far from their parents. Contrary to stereotypes, the Belarusian prose writer grows flowers, not potatoes, and has given one garden bed under the "bulb" for demonstration to the guests.

In Gromyko's cottage, 4 oriental cats freely live, whose nicknames, unlike the name of her son, the writer does not hide - these are Yeti, Lance, Vinnie and Leva. Olga got her first experience of being close to felines when she got married, and Gromyko and her husband got the black cat. However, when the writer gave birth to a son, the animal did not get along with the boy and left the family.
Olga is an atheist. She loves traveling and hates cleaning, but, like Agatha Christie, she believes that routine household chores allow her to think about plots. He is fond of collecting mugs for foamy drinks. He believes that taking offense at a writer for not wanting to divulge the details of his personal life is the same as blaming a beautiful woman met on the street for not wanting to share the bed.
Contrary to Olga's previous words that she cannot afford a dog, since she appreciates peace and quiet more and more with age, in 2019 a corgi was added to the "zoo" of the author of a humorous fantasy.

At first, the breeders slipped a deaf puppy into Gromyko, but the writer was able to convince the sellers to take the sick animal, and now the cheerful barking of young Yusi is heard in the writer's cottage. Usually secretive Olga even posted a video in LJ, in which the dog demonstrates the wonders of quick wit and obedience, flawlessly following the commands of the hostess.
In 2019, Gromyko's bibliography was replenished with a new work - the novel Cyborg and His Forester. In March, the presentation of the book and Olga's autograph session took place in Moscow on Vernadsky Avenue.
