Biography

Oleg Divov is one of the most popular Russian science fiction writers. In his work, the writer is not limited to one direction and writes in various fantastic subgenres - from dystopias and space operas to Slavic fantasy.

Oleg Igorevich Divov (on his father Sklyarenko) was born in Moscow on October 3, 1968. The family of the future writer was inextricably linked with art - Oleg comes from a family of hereditary restorers of the Tretyakov Gallery. Divov himself claims that by blood he is ¼ Assyrian. Interest in the word manifested itself in his youth, and from the age of 14 the young man was published as a journalist.

In 1987, the future writer was drafted into the army, where he served in the artillery troops for 2 years. The weapon with which Divov worked directly during his service was the 2C4 "Tulip" - a self-propelled mortar. Returning home with the rank of sergeant, the guy began his studies at the Faculty of Journalism of Moscow State University, but in 1991 he was expelled - he had accumulated 16 exams and credits, which he did not pass.

This event did not prevent Oleg from returning to practical journalism, and he took up copywriting, already planning to become a writer. The choice and ability to work with words made it possible to devote enough time to work on the first novel - in an interview, the man said that in a week of hard work he earned the amount necessary for a quiet life for a month.

Books

Divov's first novel in his biography, The Master of Dogs, was released in 1997 and became part of the Zombie Trail trilogy. Readers were attracted by the novelty of plot solutions against the background of the standards of Russian science fiction of the 1990s. As a result, the trilogy is still popular today, although according to fans, the next 2 books are weaker than the first.

Later, the novel The Law of the Frontier (The Young and the Strong Will Survive) was published, written in a genre close to post-apocalypse. Oleg put some of his own qualities into the main character of the novel. In particular, Gosh, like Divov, is a former Brain Ring player. In 1999, Oleg wrote the novel "Culling", which differs both from the previous and from the future creativity of the science fiction writer. The book, written in a dystopian genre that is not popular today, turned out to be as popular as it is controversial.

The author was greatly surprised by the fact: the audience liked the charismatic protagonists so much that the sharply negative and cruel version of the world described in the book eluded her. Readers of the 90s, tired of instability and chaos, considered the described imperial state with the most severe repressive system not dystopia, but utopia. Culling has collected a large number of awards, has been reprinted several times, has been nominated for the Bronze Snail and Interpresscon awards, and has been translated into Estonian and Polish.

In 2005, Oleg wrote the book "Billy Got Shit", which became the beginning of the "Profession: Inquisitor" series. In an interview with the magazine "World of Fiction" the writer said that he values this story most highly of his works of "average form". Among fans, "Billy Got Shit" is very popular, and the capacious and short "curses" of its main characters were diverted into quotes, becoming a good substitute for foul language.

In the future, the cycle was continued, but Oleg himself said that he had something to do with him only at the initial stage: most of the novels were written by his wife Svetlana Prokopchik.

The next "high-profile" book in the writer's bibliography, "The Weapon of Retaliation", was published in 2007 and, like "Billy's got a shit", was partially published before release, in Divov's Live Journal. "Weapon of Retaliation", in fact, is a collection of autobiographical tales about the times of the writer's service in the USSR army. In terms of vocabulary and plots, the book is designed for an adult contingent, but it captivates with its honesty and humorous coverage of issues of army life, which they even seriously try not to write about.

In 2008, in the collection "Harmful Profession" Divov published another series of stories, which first saw the light in his "Live Journal" - "LLC Psychotronika". Absurdistic sketches about a very specific company are still popular on the Internet and often serve as material for re-posts.

Published in 2011, the book “Don't Lean. The Truth About the Metro ”, in which Oleg was a co-author, allowed readers to look at the Moscow subway from the train driver's window. The main material was provided by Max Rublev ("LJ" - user of metroelf), on whose memories of work the work is based, but the name Divov on the cover became the guarantor of demand.

A year later, Oleg presented his readers with another novel in the genre of not fantastic, but realistic prose - "A consultant on stupid issues." The book, written in the wake of the armed conflict in South Ossetia, turned out to be a tragicomic reflection on the war from the point of view of a non-military person, but not completely “civilian”.

Distinctive features of Oleg Divov's work can be called an ironic look at things, attempts to play with form and an emphasis on the psychology of the characters, even in the genres of action and space opera. Fans have repeatedly mentioned that in Divov's books they are attracted by the light language and the invariably interesting plot plot, which ensures the readability of the books even when the ending is disappointing.

Personal life

Oleg Divov regularly attends writing conventions and gives interviews, but prefers to talk not about his personal life, but about creativity. It is known that the writer has two children from early marriages and that he was married for a long time to a colleague in the workshop, Svetlana Prokopchik. Judging by the information on the Web, they broke up before Svetlana's death from cancer in 2017.

It is known that Oleg loves dogs, in particular Caucasian shepherd dogs. The first book of the writer is dedicated to one of them, Karma, and a photo with her can be found on the science fiction blog. Based on Oleg's posts in LJ, it can be assumed that this is a dog of a certain Catherine, with whom the writer met for 3 years.

Divov does not have a blog on the popular Instagram network - fans can follow the writer's life and work in his Facebook and LiveJournal accounts (he continues to maintain the latter, despite the decline in the popularity of LJ).

Oleg Divov now

In 2018, Divov's new novel, "Alien Land," was published, about an attempt to colonize an earth-like planet. In the process, a snag is revealed - the planet is already inhabited, and its inhabitants are very similar to earthlings.

Now Oleg is one of the most popular Russian science fiction writers. Divov's books are both published and republished. Most of the writer's works have been nominated for literary awards at least once. Oleg is the owner of several dozen literary prizes, and the number of nominations is already in the hundreds.
