Biography
Born in Brooklyn in 1969, Noah Baumbach discovered cinema at a young age, his parents both being critics. After studying at Vassar University, he directed his first film Kicking and Screaming at the age of twenty-six. He was then chosen by Newsweek magazine as one of the "ten people to watch". The following year, he wrote Highball, a comedy about two newlyweds seeking to rise up socially.
In 2004, he co-wrote with Wes Anderson the screenplay for La Vie Aquatique. But it was a year later that Noah Baumbach truly found success with The Berkmans Separate. Partly autobiographical, the feature film tells how two teenagers react to the news of their parents' divorce. The latter are played by Laura Linney and Jeff Daniels who receive numerous nominations for their roles. The director won two awards at the Sundance Festival.
He then directs Nicole Kidman and Jennifer Jason Leigh in Margot Goes to Marriage. In 2009, he reunited with his friend Wes Anderson to co-script the animated film Fantastic M. Fox. The same year, Noah Baumbach left for Los Angeles to shoot Greenberg in which Ben Stiller and Greta Gerwig formed an unlikely couple.
Back in New York, Noah Baumbach again joins forces with the actress to write the screenplay for her new film Frances Ha, the initiatory story of a young woman who gradually sees her moving away, her best friend and her illusions. He is also co-scripting the new adventures of the talking animals of Madagascar with Madagascar 3: Bons Baisers d'Europe. In 2014, the atypical director produced While We're Young, a creaking comedy on the passing of time and for which he found Ben Stiller.
