Nina Matvienko is a Ukrainian singer, famous performer of folk songs, laureate of the international folklore festival in Bratislava, People's Artist of the Ukrainian SSR, laureate of the State Prize of the Ukrainian SSR named after I. T. G. Shevchenko.

Nina Matvienko was born on October 10, 1947 in the village of Nedelishche, located on the territory of the Zhytomyr region of Ukraine. Her parents, Mitrofan Ustimovich and Antonina Ilkovna, gave birth to eleven children in total, of which Nina was the fifth. From the age of four, the girl looked after her younger sisters and brothers, grazed cattle and performed other household chores to help her parents.

The large family was poor, and the parents decided that one of the children should be sent to a boarding school. Nina, who at that time was eleven years old, had a cheerful disposition, sociability, easily found contact with people. The mother believed that it would be easiest for her to survive parting with her family. In 1958, the girl was sent to a boarding school located in the village of Potievka.

As the matured Nina Mitrofanovna later admitted in an interview, life in the boarding school turned out to be a serious test for her. And in her own family, the girl did not live too carefree because of the difficult financial situation. But still, the children left with their parents, at least not had to kneel in the corner for several hours for any offense. However, despite such a situation, Nina did not lose her love for people and faith in herself.

During her school years, she became interested in reading, and also began to engage in acrobatics and athletics. In addition, the vociferous girl sang songs of Lyudmila Zykina with might and main, although she did not even think of a singer's career at that time. Nina dreamed of becoming an athlete. She was not tall, but she took part in the regional competition in throwing wooden grenades, which brought a lot of positive emotions. The situation was corrected by the girl's school teacher, who advised her to study music professionally.
