Biography

Nikol Pashinyan is a journalist, oppositionist, member of parliament, one of the authors of the “velvet revolution” in Armenia, held under the slogan “Take a step, reject Serge”. According to the “Elk” Union, a precedent of peaceful regime change has been created in the republic. Pashinyan, as the leader of the protest, promised that he would bring the victory to the end and achieve democratic changes, but at the same time revenge and shadow rule of any forces were excluded.

fact

Childhood and youth

Nikol was born in Ijevan, a small town in the north-east of Armenia. The city stands at the intersection of ancient trade routes and a couple of centuries ago was considered the eastern gate of the republic, and the carpet weaving factory that worked here was famous for its products throughout the Soviet Union.

How Pashinyan's childhood passed, what the future deputy of parliament was fond of is still unknown to the general public. In 1991, after graduating from Ijevan School No. 1, Nikol entered the Journalism Department of the Philological Faculty of Yerevan State University. In parallel with his studies he worked as a correspondent in the editorial offices of the newspaper "Dprutyun" and "Lragir", as an editor in the publication "Molorak".

According to the portal "Caucasian Knot", Pashinyan never received a higher education diploma, since he was expelled from the university for political differences.

Journalism

In 1998, Nikol founded the Oragir newspaper and took over as editor-in-chief. Fresh issues of the newspaper were published 5 times a week, until the newspaper was closed in 1999 for opposition views. During this year, Pashinyan was repeatedly prosecuted under various articles, ranging from insults to slander. Nikol received a year of imprisonment, but it is not said whether the journalist served his sentence.

A year later, Pashinyan moved to the chair of the editor-in-chief of the authoritative newspaper “Haykakan Zhamanak” (“Armenian Time”), which criticized the authority of President Robert Kocharian in all areas of work. In 2007, a new page in Nikola's biography opened - active political activity, not limited to the pages of the press. Then Pashinyan first participated in the parliamentary elections, leading the list from the Impeachment bloc.

However, the alliance of the Conservative Party, the social and political movement “Alternative” and the “Democratic Fatherland”, which advocated the resignation of Robert Kocharian, did not pass the percentage barrier. The journalist announced a sit-in on Yerevan's Freedom Square to protest the falsification of election results.

In 2008, Nikol joined the campaign headquarters of the first popularly elected President of Armenia, Levon Ter-Petrosyan, who was going to participate in the presidential race again. Serzh Sargsyan won the elections then. This was followed by mass riots, accompanied by the death of people and arrests of oppositionists.

Pashinyan managed to escape, but after a year and a half, the journalist voluntarily surrendered to the authorities. On the pages of his own edition, Nikola published a series of articles entitled "Prison Diary", written in the isolation ward.

At this time, the "Impeachment" bloc became part of the opposition Armenian National Congress. In 2009, the ANC decided to nominate Pashinyan as a candidate in the by-elections to the National Assembly. While in prison, Nikol, of course, could not conduct a full-fledged election campaign.

Moreover, for violations of the regime and conflicts with neighbors in the cell, the oppositionist was first sent to a punishment cell, and from there - to a closed institution. In the summer of 2011, Pashinyan was released under an amnesty and became involved in the country's political life.

In 2012, the Armenian National Congress received its representative in the National Assembly in the person of Nikol Pashinyan. A year later, the ambitious journalist took over at the helm of a new political association, Civil Contract. Later, the union, united with two more parties, formed the Exodus (Elk) bloc.

In the 2017 parliamentary elections, Elk turned out to be the only opposition force represented in the National Assembly. In Armenia, the party is considered the most pro-European, and has a negative attitude towards the country's entry into the Eurasian Economic Union.

The Support Center for Russian-Armenian Strategic and Public Initiatives gives two points of view regarding the figure of Nikol Pashinyan. According to the first, the USA is betting on Pashinyan as a young and promising politician. Hence, in the opinion of observers, one should expect an appropriate attitude towards Russia and towards those who are on its side.

The adherents of the second version believed that Pashinyan and the new party “Civil Contract” headed by him were simply a political project of media mogul Mikael Minasyan, husband of the daughter of ex-President Serzh Sargsyan.

fact

Personal life

Although Nikol Pashinyan is a well-known personality in the political arena of Armenia, his private life is still judged only by the information that leaks into the media. The journalist's family has three children. The wife of the leader of the My Step protest movement is Anna Hakobyan. The wife, like the eldest son Ashot, takes an active part in the rallies organized by Nikol. Pashinyan's middle daughter is in school, the youngest is still quite a baby.

During the April 2018 events in Yerevan, Ashot was arrested by the police. According to Anna, quoted by Arabot-ru.am, the young man was detained for blocking the streets. Later, Armtimes.com reported that the police did not confirm the arrest of Pashinyan's son, and referred to the statement of Ashot himself, according to which he spent three hours at the police station.

The Armenian news portal Slaq.am published an article from which it follows that, being the owner of “Haykakan Zhamanak”, Nikol exaggerates the plight of the opposition, on behalf of which he speaks.

The portal estimated the monthly income from the sale of the newspaper's circulation at $ 30 thousand, and this is not counting the publication of certain ordered materials, which have a completely different cost. It has become fashionable in society to criticize, opposition information is in demand and automatically increases not only ratings, but also sales.

Pashinyan's statement that his wife is in charge of the business, according to Slaq.am, is duplicitous, since in the National Assembly he fiercely criticizes colleagues who have taken a similar step, demands that there are no businessmen in parliament, but “he is an entrepreneur himself and throwing dust in the eyes of the people trying to play oppositionist. "

fact

Nikol Pashinyan now

In April 2018, a mass movement of dissatisfied with the election of former President Serzh Sargsyan to the post of Prime Minister began in Armenia. The Internet cites the words of residents of the republic, claiming that they supported the transition to a parliamentary republic in order not to see Sargsyan in the political arena.

Pashinyan became the organizer of the protests and at a meeting with President Armen Sargsyan said that only Sargsyan's resignation could be the subject of discussion in possible negotiations. The leader of the protesters said this live on a Facebook page, while urging supporters to increase pressure on the authorities.

But the dialogue between the prime minister and the journalist did not work out. Sargsyan accused the oppositionist of leaving the legal field, shifted all responsibility to him and left the meeting place. Nikol, in turn, reproached the head of government for not knowing the situation. After that, the police began to disperse the demonstrators, and Pashinyan was detained.

The website Armeniasputnik.am quoted Nikol's story about how the authorities tried to bargain with him about the timing of Sargsyan's resignation: first they offered to wait for October, then they asked for a month and, finally, April 25. The journalist put forward an ultimatum - 2 hours.

A little later, Serzh Sargsyan announced his resignation from the post of prime minister, and on April 23, 2018, the Armenian government was dismissed. On May 8, 2018 Nikol Pashinyan was elected Acting. Prime Minister of Armenia. The decision was taken in the second vote, where 59 deputies voted for the opposition's candidacy, 42 against.

On October 24, 2018, the National Assembly of Armenia did not elect Pashinyan as the country's prime minister during a vote. The oppositionist himself urged not to vote for him earlier.
