Biography

Nicolas Maduro is the incumbent president of Venezuela with a rich and long political past.

The beginning of his reign fell on a difficult economic period for the state, which led to prolonged popular unrest due to colossal inflation.

fact

Childhood and youth

Nicholas Maduro Moros was born on November 23, 1962 in Caracas. The father of the future politician was a local trade union leader and was a member of the Socialist Party of Venezuela. In addition to the boy, the family had 3 daughters: Maria Teresa, Josephine and Anita.

Nicholas calls himself a person of mixed race: in the Maduro family there are representatives of the indigenous peoples of the Americas, as well as African-Hispanics. In addition, Nicholas's paternal grandparents were Sephardic Jews who converted to Catholicism in Venezuela.

In his youth, Maduro was distinguished by a cheerful character and was fond of music: his favorite bands were "The Rolling Stones" and "Led Zeppelin". The future politician even wanted to create his own group and become a rock musician.

Political activity

Membership in the student association of the university became a political “test of the pen” for Nicholas, although he did not receive higher education later.

In 1983, during the failed presidential campaign of Jose Vicente Rangel, Nicholas was his bodyguard, in 1987 he studied at the Havana party school "Niko Lopez". After 4 years, Maduro began working as a bus driver in the Caracas Metro system. He held this position for 7 years, becoming the unofficial leader of the trade union movement of bus drivers of the Caracas metro.

In 1993, together with a group of like-minded people, Nicholas visited Hugo Chávez, who was imprisoned after an unsuccessful coup attempt in the state. From that moment, Maduro became one of the activists in favor of the release of Chavez. Later, the politician joined the MVR party, which supported Hugo's 1998 presidential campaign.

In 1998, Maduro began his career in big politics, becoming a candidate for deputies of the Republic's Congress, and on January 23, 1999, he already headed the MVR parliamentary faction in the Venezuelan Chamber of Deputies. A little later, the politician was elected to the 1999 Constituent Assembly, which developed a new constitution for the Capital District of Venezuela. Maduro's career quickly went uphill: in 2000 and 2005, he was elected to the National Assembly from the Capital District of the country. In addition, Nicholas became the speaker of parliament - the lack of special education did not prevent this.

In 2006, President Hugo Chavez personally asked Maduro to take up the post of Foreign Minister, replacing Ali Rodriguez Araque, who became Secretary General of the Union of South American Nations. In addition, on December 8, 2012, Hugo Chavez, already seriously ill with cancer, announced that if he left the presidency, Nicholas should take him. So Maduro, while remaining foreign minister, also became vice president of Venezuela.

After Chavez's death on March 5, 2013, the politician served as acting president until the April elections. International media questioned his eligibility for this position, since due to illness, Chavez could not take the oath of office for the 4th presidential term. The Supreme Court found these claims groundless, since by the time of his death the president was already in power, and the government of the state has administrative succession. Thus, Maduro had the right to fulfill presidential duties.

Early elections were held in Venezuela on April 14, 2013 - according to the Constitution, if the president dies during the first 4 years of his term in office, new elections must be held within 30 days. Maduro passed his political opponent Enrique Capriles by 1.5% of the vote.

Argentine journalist Andrés Oppenheimer, a longtime critic of Chávez’s power, said Maduro had the upper hand in the elections as his propaganda was aided by mourning for the deceased president. Capriles, meanwhile, were allowed only 4 minutes of campaign advertising per day. Nominally, Maduro had the same, but added 10 minutes of announcements from the civil service and the government.

As a result, Capriles refused to accept the election results, since, according to his information, at least 3.5 thousand violations were revealed during the voting. Maduro agreed to recount the votes, but the idea was rejected by the National Electoral Council, citing the automation of the counting process and the fact that re-checks were originally included in the procedure. On April 19, 2013, Nicholas Maduro was sworn in.

The politician took the country in a difficult situation: together with the government he got the national debt and 13% of the budget deficit. However, against the background of high oil prices, the situation was improved, and Venezuela's GDP grew by 1.6%. In October, Maduro asked the National Assembly for special powers to tackle corruption. The policy was supported by 99 parliamentarians. With a total of 165 people, this number of those who spoke in favor was enough to accept the initiative.

In November, the President undertook a dubious action. After the arrests of the owners of networks selling electrical household goods, the confiscated products were sold to the population at a price reduced by 10 times. The police managed to cope with the popular enthusiasm only partially: many shops were looted.

The next victim of the fight against corruption was the Daka retail chain. However, the arrest of the owners and the confiscation of products could not cope with either the deficit or inflation, which exceeded 50%. The grave situation was supplemented by rampant crime. As a result, in February 2014, massive civil actions began in the country.

Their participants demanded more security, and also declared the economic crisis not even the result of government policy, but its very policy. The actions resulted in clashes with law enforcement agencies, which, in turn, led to new protests.

In retaliation, Maduro spoke on state television and urged fellow citizens not to succumb to provocations. In addition, the president said that the opponents have a coup plan.

2014-2015 became difficult for Venezuela, especially in terms of the economy: the fall in world oil prices led to increased inflation, and by 2016 the government even had to devalue the Venezuelan bolivar.

Economic hardship and regular protests resulted in the unexpected result of the 2015 elections to the National Assembly: most of the seats in it were taken by representatives of the opposition. Thus, the parliament became a field of political struggle, and for a long time Maduro was saved only by the support of the Supreme Court of Venezuela.

In 2016, they tried to remove the president from office: the National Assembly of the country accused Maduro of a coup d'état. In October, a vote was taken to start impeachment proceedings. The President turned to the Vatican for help, and the Pope sent the Vatican Secretary of State to negotiate with the Venezuelan opposition. The result was the suspension of impeachment and the release of 5 opposition politicians.

However, on January 9, 2017, a majority of the deputies voted to declare the president out of office due to non-performance of duties. The Supreme Court again helped Maduro - it recognized that parliament did not have the power to remove the president.

Personal life

The President of Venezuela is one of the tallest leaders of the world states, his height is 190 cm.

Nicholas Maduro was married twice. The first wife was Adriana Guerra Angulo. The marriage lasted from 1988 to 1994, and the only son of the president, Nicolas Maduro Guerra, was born to the couple. He is also known as Nicolasito and is involved in politics: for example, he has a seat in the National Assembly and runs the National Film School.

In 2013, the president's personal life changed - he got married again. The second wife in the biography of Maduro was the lawyer and politician Celia Flores. The romantic relationship between Celia and the future president began in the 1990s, when Flores was a lawyer for Hugo Chávez. The couple have no joint children, but Maduro became the adoptive father of Celia's 3 children from his first marriage.

To inform the population and communicate with citizens, the President of Venezuela maintains an official Twitter account. The blog is public in nature: materials and photos highlight the political life of Maduro.

Nicholas Maduro now

Now, despite the harsh crackdown on opposition demonstrations and a number of preventive and punitive measures, mass demonstrations by opponents of the current Venezuelan government continue.

On August 4, 2018, a parade was held in Venezuela to mark the 81st anniversary of the creation of the National Guard. During it, an attempt was made on Maduro's life - they tried to kill the president using flying drones filled with explosives. A group of "Flannel Soldiers" claimed responsibility for the incident.

At the end of 2018, Maduro met with the head of the Russian Federation. During the open part of the meeting, Vladimir Putin condemned the terrorist attacks of the Venezuelan opposition, but said that Maduro's actions should be aimed at settling relations with political opponents. Energy remains a key aspect of Russian-Venezuelan relations.

In 2019, Venezuela changed its oil trading laws - according to the statement of Nicolas Maduro, all oil products will now be sold only for the Venezuelan cryptocurrency Petro. According to him, such a step is a way to get rid of the political influence of the currency of the "Washington elite". Simultaneously with this statement, the President announced a 2.5-fold increase in the minimum wage in Venezuela.
