Neil Burger was born in Connecticut. After graduating from Yale University with honors in the Department of Fine Arts, he focused on experimental film until the 1980s. He subsequently directed music videos, notably for the rock group Meat Puppets, before working for MTV. He staged there advertisements within the framework of the fight against illiteracy from 1991. In 1997, he married the architect Diana Kellogg, whom he has not left since.
