Biography
This rock band broke all records of fame in the Soviet Union. Their songs were sung with a guitar, kilometers of tape were spent on rewriting cassettes. "This music will be eternal", - the author of the words of most of the compositions of the group "Nautilus Pompilius" looked into the water, for fans of "Nau" it is.
fact
Creation history and composition
The official name of the team, created on November 10, 1982 by the students of the Sverdlovsk Architectural Institute, is "Nautilus Pompilius".
At first the group bore the name "Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves", in 1983, at the suggestion of sound engineer Andrey Makarov, it became "Nautilus", and in 1985, so that it would not be confused with the group of Yevgeny Margulis of the same name, acquired the name "Nautilus Pompilius" with the light hand of Kormiltsev. When designing musical products, the title was written in capital letters, either Cyrillic or Latin.
In 1983 Vyacheslav Butusov (vocals), Dmitry Umetsky (bass guitar), Andrey Sadnov (guitar) and Alexander Zarubin (drums) - the first composition of "Nau" - presented the album "Moving" to the audience. Then the guys played hard rock, and the influence of "Led Zeppelin" clearly sounded in their work. Some of the songs of "Moving" were written to the poems of Hungarian authors Endre Adi and Lerinets Szabo. It's just that Butusov, when he went to Chelyabinsk, found at the bus stop a collection of poems that he liked with their mysticism.

Music
In the mid-1980s, starting with the album "Invisible", the genre changed. Now it was a new wave, which "Nautilus" came to after a close acquaintance with the music of Leningraders - "Kino" and "Aquarium". People who are versed in music will identify in the work of "Nau" features inherent in such trends as alternative rock, post-punk, gothic, art, glam and even fockle rock.
In 1986, with the appearance of the album "Separation", "Nautilus Pompilius" was covered with the first wave of fame. A military uniform, repainted in black, makeup that highlights the eyes, restrained, but no less bright plastic - how the team looked then can be clearly seen in concert photos and videos.
In 1987, Nautilus, performing at the Plenum of the Union of Composers of the RSFSR and at the rock festival in Novosibirsk, showed that Sverdlovsk rock is no worse than Leningrad. The residents of Urals have earned the right to stand on a par with Alisa, Aquarium, Kino, and they proved it in the same year on the Vilnius, Podolsk and Moscow rock stages.
In 1986-1988 the group used the saxophone, and this melody brought the group closer to pop music, and therefore was critically perceived by the public. An important role in the rise of "Nau" was played by the professional, topical texts of Ilya Kormiltsev, which he wrote for the group from 1986 to 1997, and, of course, the unique charisma of the band's frontman Butusov. Journalist Sergei Lomakin recalled that the Vzglyad program contributed to the interest in Russian rock, in particular, in its civic position.
1988 - the peak of fame for "Nautilus", a year of active tours both in the USSR and abroad (specifically, in Finland, after the Finns shot a tape about Soviet rock "Sickle and Guitar"). At the same time, the Melodiya recording company released the "Prince of Silence" record: early hits, such as "The Last Letter" or "Casanova", and new works, for example, "I want to be with you."
Constant touring, the gradually emerging domestic show business, next to which it was necessary to exist, commercial success gave rise to problems and quarrels in the group. The composition varied many times until the team left Umetsky. Vyacheslav Butusov, tired of trying to combine "Nau" and show business, disbanded the team in late autumn 1988.
In 1989, Butusov and Umetsky renewed their relationship and even created a new album - "A Man Without a Name". But the differences persisted, and the short-term reunion ended in a final break. The album appeared on the shelves of record stores only in 1995.
Interesting fact: Butusov, Kormiltsev and Umetsky were awarded the Lenin Komsomol Prize in 1989. Kormiltsev did not receive the prize for ideological reasons. Butusov transferred the money to the Peace Fund and the Sverdlovsk orphanage. And Umetsky received the prize by coming to the presentation.
In 1990, "Nautilus" was revived in a new incarnation: the melodic saxophone was replaced by harsh guitar playing and complex rhythms. "Nau" became unrecognizable, since only Kormiltsev's texts and Butusov's voice remained unchanged in it. But the words also changed: instead of the sharp "social", philosophical and even religious motives began to sound. For example, the song “Walking on the Water”, which became a hit, tells about the Apostle Andrew and his Teacher, although it differs from the canonical biblical story.
In 1990-1992, the albums "Nagad", "Born on this Night" and "Foreign Land" were released, and in 1993 - "Report 1983-1993", the first tribute in the history of Russian rock, dedicated to the 10th anniversary of "Nau ".
In the same year, quarrels began to eat away at the band again, guitarists Yegor Belkin and Alexander Belyaev left. Vadim Samoilov, one of the founders of the Agatha Christie group, helped Nautilus to record the album "Titanic" in 1994. Titanic is Nau's most successful album commercially.
Critics tend to consider the album "Wings" unsuccessful, and the musicians themselves admitted that it was created with difficulty. Nevertheless, the composition "Wings" exploded the charts after the release of Alexander Balabanov's film "Brother".
The entire soundtrack of the tape consists of the songs "Nau", and the film itself begins with a demonstration of how the clip "Wings" was filmed. In 1996 "Nau" tried acoustic sounding and played several concerts, which gave new life to the old songs.
In the discography of "Nautilus" many compositions have become legendary. The same "Tutankhamun" from "Titanic" sounded, perhaps, from every stall in the 1990s and is still loved by fans. Butusov said that the composition "Tutankhamun" was meant as a ballad, but he accelerated it.
The original acoustic version of the piece is played in Titanic on the Fontanka. This album was written with the help of the musicians of "Aquarium" a year earlier than the main "Titanic", which sounds an accelerated version.
The final touches of the biography of "Nautilus Pompilius" were the records "Yablokitay" and "Atlantis". Boris Grebenshchikov and Bill Nelson, who produced the album, took part in the recording of Yablokitaya. And the name "Atlantis" was given to a collection of compositions that for some reason were not included in other albums.
That year, Butusov decided that the framework of "Nautilus" was too tight for him, and disbanded the group. The Last Voyage concert and a farewell tour in 1997 put an end to the band's history.
In 2003 and 2004, Nautilus reunited briefly to take part in rock festivals. In 2013, Butusov with the U-Piter group held a series of concerts "NAU - 30 years under water". In Moscow, St. Petersburg and Yekaterinburg, a surprise awaited the audience - one of the band's line-ups appeared on the stage. So, in Moscow, Yegor Belkin, Albert Potapkin, Goga Kopylov and Alexander Belyaev played with Butusov, and Nastya Poleva joined them.
