Natalia Yaresko's political career started in 1989 at the US State Department, where she worked in the economic department on Soviet issues. Three years later, during the collapse of the Soviet Union, she was sent to Ukraine as head of the economic department at the US Embassy. Even then, the future finance minister paid special attention to reforming the Ukrainian state, but she was disappointed in the Ukrainian politicians, who, according to her, were inactive strategists.

Already in 2006, she managed to create and head the investment company Horizon Capital with a registered capital of $ 132 million. In 2008, Jaresko launched a second investment fund with a volume of $ 370 million, leaving WNISEF under her management.
