At the age of 14, Montgomery Clift began his career on the Broadway stage. The director Elia Kazan spots him, and advises him to register for the legendary Actor's Studio. Until 1948, he only performed in the theater. It is in 1948 that the cinema is interested in this young man, who will offer him a first golden role in a film by Fred Zinnemann, The Marked Angels (1948). For his performance as an American soldier who will help a young Czech find his mother, the actor has already been nominated for the Oscars.

Montgomery Clift is seen by Hollywood as the ideal son-in-law, but his tormented gaze reveals another, more complex side. In this, he also passes for a disturbing actor. His role in Howard Hawks' western La Rivière rouge (1948) once again allowed him to show off his talent. He stands up to John Wayne then at the height of his glory, while Clift is only in his second film. He went on to shoot alongside the biggest stars: Olivia de Havilland in L'Héritière (1949), Elizabeth Taylor in A Place in the Sun (1951) by George Stevens. For the latter, the actor is once again nominated for the Oscars.

The greatest directors are snapping up the handsome young man: Alfred Hitchcock offers him the unforgettable role of a priest who is confessed to a murder and who finds himself accused of it and cannot be exonerated (La Loi du silence, 1953 ). That same year, Fred Zinnemann reunited with him for As long as there will be men alongside Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr. Finally, a short European experience, Montgomery Clift went to Italy to play in a film by Vittorio De Sica called Station Terminus.

In 1956, he was the victim of a car accident which disfigured him while filming The Tree of Life by Edward Dmytryk. Thanks to cosmetic surgery, he finished filming, but came out very weakened from this experience. His career is not stopped, however, since he finds his friend Elizabeth Taylor for the third time on screen for Suddenly last summer, based on the play by Tennessee Williams. In 1958, he collaborated again with Edward Dmytryk for Le Bal des maudits with Marlon Brando and Dean Martin and Elia Kazan called on him for Le Fleuve sauvage.

His last landmark film will be his participation in John Huston's Désaxés, with Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe. After a role of little importance in Judgment at Nuremberg, and the commercial failure of Freud, secret passions (1962), Clift will play his last role in The Spy (1966) by Raoul Levy. Prematurely worn out, he died at 46 of a heart attack.
