With the name Miriam Gessner, German sports pinned great hopes. It was she who was going to give the leader's jersey the most titled biathlete Magdalena Neuner. But the circumstances were different.

Miriam was born in June 1990 in the tiny Bavarian town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Actually, due to its small size, the settlement does not have the status of a city, but it was created to host the Olympics. The new biathlon star shone with the Gessner Gold Medal won at the 2008 Junior World Championships. A year later, at a similar competition in Canada, the German woman won a silver medal in the sprint and a gold medal in the pursuit.

The jet girl was noticed at the national sports committee and assigned to the adult cross-country skiing team, which was preparing for the World Cup. Miri lived up to her hopes: from the Czech Liberec, the girl brought the silver medal won in the relay.

The first biathlon World Cup in Gessner's biography in the 2009-2010 season upset the debutante. The athlete chalked up 12 misses and, accordingly, was left without a place in the overall standings. At the beginning of the 2012-2013 season, the journalists exaggerated not so much the athlete's mistakes as the story of Miriam's loss of a tooth while passing the track. Apparently, the annoying fact enough angered Gessner, because then a wave of personal cup podiums followed: victorious - in Italy, gold and twice silver - in Slovenia. Bronze and two gold received at home, gold and bronze - in Russia. As usual, Miriam did not go without penalties.

At the World Championships in Czech Nove Mesto Miri was left without awards. But the indefatigable athlete immediately left for Italy, for the World Ski Championships. There it was not possible to show off the results, and Miriam was only half a second away from the podium in the 10 km race. After the world championship, Gessner found the strength to participate in the World Cup stage, but fatigue took its toll - the girl got positions in the second and third ten.

An old tooth problem affected the stability of Gessner's performances. The titanium prosthesis caused allergies, Miriam suffered from headaches, lack of appetite, or, conversely, from being overweight. As a result, the girl underwent an operation to implant bone tissue.

While preparing for the Olympic season, Miriam fell in a cycling training session. The girl received a fracture of four vertebrae and a threat to remain in a wheelchair. Subsequently, the German woman missed several stages of the World Cup, and then even stated that she would not come to the Olympic Games in Sochi.

In the summer of 2014, Gessner tried to reclaim the top lines of the world rankings. Moving away from a concussion received at home competitions, Miri got into the team declared by Germany for the first stage of the World Cup. Due to negative results, Miriam was not taken to the world championship in Kontiolahti.

The bronze medal at the stage in Hochfilzen in 2015 secured Miriam Gessner a place in the main squad of the German national team. But the rise was again replaced by a decline, with the shooting, despite the change of coach, did not go well.

Gessner did not appear on the track of the 2016 World Cup, held in Tyumen. However, already at the stage of the World Cup in Slovenia, Miri did not have enough to get a medal in the sprint, but problems with speed were added to poor shooting. The couple attended the wedding of football player Bastian Schweinsteiger, where the girl caught the bridal bouquet. But to logical questions from journalists, young people answered that they would get married when they wanted. Moreover, they rarely see each other and it will be difficult to organize a wedding. But in an interview, Miriam shared that if she wants to live in her mother's homeland among the Norwegian fjords, she plans to perform under the flag of Germany until the end of her career.

Gessner's final performance at the World Cup took place in January 2017. Then she was content with 47th place in the pursuit.
