Biography
Opinions differ as to his date of birth: some put forward April 27, 1962, others January 22. Either way, Choi Min-sik's career might never have seen the light of day: while he was still in elementary school, he was diagnosed with tuberculosis. Doctors can't help him. However, the child will survive after a prolonged stay in the depths of the Korean mountains to regain his strength and purify his lungs.
After graduating from Dongguk University, the actor first became known on the stage, before meeting his first cinematic success with Our Twisted Hero (1992), by Park Jong-won. It was with this director that he had previously appeared on the big screen, in 1989, in Kuro Arirang. His career in the 90s oscillates between the continuity of his theatrical journey and his appearances in several Korean series and dramas. He got his first leading roles at the end of the decade, in The Quiet Family (1998), by Kim Jee-woon and Shiri (1999), by Kang Je-kyu, playing the characters of unscrupulous policeman and double agent. . This latest film gets him widely noticed as it is often considered the first Korean blockbuster.
That same year, he finally appeared as headliner in Jung Ji-woo's Happy End, in which he played a cuckolded husband discovering his wife's infidelity. He co-starred with Cecilia Cheung in Failan (2001), Song Hye-sung's melodrama which has since become cult in Korea and which won the actor several awards, notably at the Blue Dragon and the Deauville Asian Film Festival. But it was in Drunken Women and Painting (2002), a historical fresco by Im Kwon-taek, that he played his first major role, embodying a painter recognized but of commoner origin in late Korea. from the 19th century.
He was finally applauded by a wider audience, both Western and Asian, in the cult film Old Boy (2003), by Park Chan-wook, in particular thanks to his playful countenance and the improvised scene of the hammer fight. The actor further diversified his roles, playing a trumpet teacher in 2004 in Springtime, by Ryoo Jang-ha, then a boxer in 2005 in Crying Fist. He returned to work for Park Chan-wook that same year in the second film of his vengeful trilogy, titled Lady Vengeance and in which the actor reunited with the actresses Kang Hye-jeong and Yun Jin-seo with whom he had already played in Oldboy.
Accused along with Song Kang-ho in 2005 of professional fraud by the director and director of the Korean government's film department, Kang Woo-suk, the following year the actor launched into a fight for the Korean film industry. Along with other film professionals, he protests in Seoul and at the Cannes Film Festival against the South Korean administration's decision to reduce Korean screen quotas from 146 to 73 days under the Accord free trade with the United States. In protest, he refuses the prestigious Okgwan Medal for Cultural Merit.
Over the next four years, he went into voluntary exile from the profession because of his protest against screen quotas, but also because of the studios' reluctance to hire a politically active actor. He returns instead to his theatrical roots, and finally returns to the cinema at the end of 2008, in Destination Himalaya, then in 2010 in I met the devil, his second incarnation in a film by Kim Jee-woon, here as an ultra-killer. violent. His appearances then became rarer and often controversial, until he agreed to play in his first Western film in English, Lucy, directed by Luc Besson in 2014.
