About five years ago, only a narrow circle of specialists knew about Mikhail Kolyada, and the circle of fans was little more. Now the young figure skater is the hope of Russian men's figure skating and a worthy contender for world podiums.

The future figure skater was born on February 18, 1995 in the suburb of St. Petersburg - Kolpino. Mikhail is the eldest son in the family, he has two sisters and a brother, whom he had to look after, so he can do everything around the house. One of the sisters also took a great interest in figure skating, but then her parents could not take her daughter to classes.

The Kolyada family loved sports: my mother was fond of skiing, my father was engaged in hand-to-hand fighting and karting. The head of the family planned to send the eldest son to the wrestling section, but the dream was realized with the youngest.

Five-year-old Misha was brought to the skating rink by his mother, a figure skating lover, but not with the aim of raising a champion, but simply to maintain health. The skater is faithful to his first coach Valentina Chebotareva even now, such consistency is almost an isolated case.

The sports biography of Mikhail was not easy: working out each element took a lot of energy, and the guy's character was not sugar.

Now Mikhail is an example of restraint and composure, and he likes training much more than competitions, and on the way to becoming a skater he could kick the side and slam the door. The young man did not understand what to do in figure skating, and four times he tried to completely leave the rink. Only Chebotareva knows what efforts it took to raise a star, and according to the figure skater, in the place of the coach he would have kicked himself out. No wonder the children of Valentina Mikhailovna say that it was as if three sons were growing up in the family, and Mikhail is a beloved.

On professional ice, Mikhail made his debut in the 2005-2006 season - he took fifth place in his age group at the Russian championship. In 2008 he already took part in the Russian Cup, a year later he won the Novice Boys category at the Tallinn Trophy in Estonia, and won a bronze medal at the 2010 St. Petersburg Championship.

In 2010, Kolyada received an award for the first place in the group at the Nikolai Panin Memorial, and won in the youth category at two stages of the Russian Cup. Mikhail competed in the same group with future teammates Maxim Kovtun and Stanislav Kovalev. A year later, the skater participated in the qualifying competitions for the junior world championship, in the final of the Russian Cup he stopped a step away from the podium. At the same time, Mikhail took part in the first ever Australian Junior Grand Prix, where he took 4th place, won first place in the group in the Russian Cup final and third in the Youth Spartakiad.

The 2012-2013 season was successful for the young athlete. Kolyada excelled at two stages of the Russian Cup and the N. Panin Memorial, won silver at the Cup of his hometown, Russia and at the Volvo Open Cup in Riga, finished sixth at the junior grand prix in France. In 2013, Mikhail entered the junior world championship for the first time and loudly declared himself, because even with sixth place he was ahead of his colleagues from Europe.

The next season, Kolyada continued to storm the pedestals. The skater won bronze at the Grand Prix in Slovakia and at the Gardena Spring Trophy in Italy, silver at the Grand Prix in Estonia and two stages of the Russian Cup, gold at the first adult Dragon Trophy championship in Slovenia.

The silver medal of the national championship opened the way for Mikhail to the skating rinks of the European and World Championships. At the continental championship, the skater took 5th place in the overall standings, and at the debut world championship - a sensational fourth place, while surpassing previous sporting achievements. It should be said that only the "bison" of world figure skating, Jin Boyan, Yuzuru Hanyu, Javier Fernandez, were ahead of Kolyada, that is, theoretically the final alignment of the standings had no chance. The Russian skater managed to prove the opposite.

Mikhail was preparing for the World Cup in America together with Nina Moser's group, the skater has always admired the performance and confidence of her athletes. The impetus for the further mood was the hire of Evgenia Tarasova and Vladimir Morozov. Kolyada's performance with not the richest program caused a storm of enthusiastic responses from both ordinary fans and professionals. Absolute detachment, even a certain state of trance with which Mikhail left the ice, caught the eye of the latter.

In the next season, Mikhail fulfilled the dream of coach Valentina Chebotareva to bring up the champion of the country. Even the advertising that turned on during the free program did not knock the mood for victory. Complementing the first success at the Russian Championship was silver at the World Team Trophy (Japan) and bronze at the European Championship, at the World Championship in Helsinki he entered the top eight.

At the final stage of the Grand Prix in Sapporo, Japan, Kolyada was the first Russian single skater to try to perform a quadruple lutz at international competitions. At the World Team Championship, Mikhail again improved his personal achievements and replenished the piggy bank with a silver medal.

There is no need to talk about Mikhail's heart secrets - the skater is young, and sports are in the first place. There is no hobby as such either, but in his free time Kolyada loves to play bowling or billiards, and if it were not for his passion for figure skating, Mikhail would have turned out to be a football player or table tennis player.

The modest Kolyada lives in St. Petersburg, in a hostel, he has not even bought his own car. In the summer of 2016, on the Instagram page, the skater boasted a bachelor's degree from the National University of Physical Education, Sports and Health named after Petr Lesgaft, and continues his master's studies.

It is difficult to imagine a short (Kolyada's height - 167 cm), even fragile Mikhail on a military parade ground. Nevertheless, the skater paid a debt to the Motherland in the CSKA sports company. Private Kolyada served in Sochi.

At the first tournament of the 2017-2018 Olympic season - Ondrej Nepela Memorial - the athlete delighted the fans with a gold medal.

At the Grand Prix stage in China, after the short program was skated, Kolyada was the first domestic single skater to break the 100 point mark. At the end of 2017, Mikhail won the Russian championship for the second time. 

The athlete was also included in the national team for the European Championship, which was held in January 2018 in Moscow. Mikhail won bronze, losing to debutant Dmitry Aliev from Russia and now six-time European champion Javier Fernandez.

On February 12, 2018, at the Olympic Games in Korea, Russian figure skaters won silver in the team competition. Many in absentia gave all the chances of victory to athletes from Russia, but the short program of Mikhail Kolyada on the first day of the competition was accompanied by falls and ripped elements. Already in the free program, Mikhail rehabilitated himself, taking second place, but this did not allow him to compete for gold.

In individual competitions, there were also mistakes in both programs, as a result, Mikhail Kolyada took 8th place at his first Olympics.
