To earn a living in the capital, a student with a compatriot, Kharkiv resident Lyudmila Gurchenko, wandered around the Moscow region with concerts. They stopped when newspapers published a devastating article about the star of "Carnival Night" accusing Gurchenko of "unearned income."

After graduating from the capital's university, Mikhail Gulko got a job as an engineer at the Yuzhgiproshakht design institute, visited the mines of Donbass, went down to the face to the miners grimy with anthracite dust. But after the shift, Mikhail washed off the coal mud and went to the club to sing. In the same design research institute, Gulko met the future Soviet pop star Vadim Mulerman, who became famous for the hit "Lada".

After returning to Moscow, several years before emigration, Mikhail Gulko got a job at the Rusalka restaurant in Karetny Ryad, where he led the orchestra. The first soloist of the Lesopoval group, Sergei Korzhukov, worked under his supervision.

In 1979, Mikhail Gulko emigrated to America. At the time of his departure, Mikhail Alexandrovich was 49 years old. In New York, the musician continued his career: he worked in restaurants, entertaining the resting public, mainly emigrants from the USSR, with songs.

The chansonnier's debut album was released in America in 1981 and is called "The Blue Sky of Russia". It includes the popular hits "Lieutenant Golitsyn", "White Birch", "Echelon" and "Kolyma". The fans sold out the first album instantly, and in 1984 the second one was released - "Burnt Bridges". The author included the songs "Farewell to the Motherland", "No need to be sad, gentlemen officers", "Cigarette butts" and "Birches in the Zone".

The following year, Mikhail Gulko recorded the disc "Songs of the War Years", timed to coincide with the release of the 40th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War.

In 1988, the chansonnier was chosen among Russian colleagues to perform at the 90th birthday of billionaire Armond Hammer. On his birthday, Gulko, accompanying himself on the accordion, sang a medley of Russian songs "Katyusha", "Black Eyes" and "Moscow Nights".

Soon the friends introduced the singer to an emigrant from Chukotka, a teacher of the Russian language. In 2000, Mikhail Gulko and Tatiana got married. According to the singer, the woman knew nothing about his work, but she turned out to be an interesting interlocutor and a wonderful person. Today Tatyana Gulko is the artist's wife and concert director.

In 2016, the patriarch of the Russian chanson presented fans with a new song "Russian Bear", which appeared on YouTube.
