Tired of knocking on the eternally closed doors of the acting faculties, Mikhail entered the Moscow State Academy of Water Transport at the Faculty of Law, after which he managed to realize his dream of becoming a student of a theater university, however, not Moscow, but St. Petersburg. Yevlanov entered the St. Petersburg State Academy of Theater Arts on the course of Grigory Serebryany and Grigory Kozlov.

After graduation, the aspiring actor played in St. Petersburg at the Theater for Young Spectators named after A. A. Bryantsev and at the Theater on Mokhovaya, and also worked as a presenter at a local radio station.

He met his future wife Tatyana Evlanov at the entrance exams at the theater academy. Mikhail was the oldest student and felt somewhat out of place in the classroom, so communication with a young attractive girl turned out to be a saving thread.
