Although he lost in the overall standings, the man still beat other rivals in the heavy category. This result inspired him and Mentzer was determined to take an overall victory the following year. This failure forever discouraged the athlete from participating in such tournaments, but did not induce him to quit the sport. Therefore, in 1980, after completing his career, he began to engage with other bodybuilders as a coach. At the same time, the man wrote books and articles in which he invited those who are engaged to consider bodybuilding from the other side. The training system he developed provided for a completely different approach - to reduce the number and time of classes and focus on rest.

In 2001, Mentzer lived in an apartment in Los Angeles, where his brother Ray found his lifeless body. After the autopsy, it turned out that the cause of death was a heart attack, a large dose of anesthetic was found in the man's body, and it contributed to the cardiac arrest.

For Ray, his brother's death was a great tragedy. He also had health problems, suffered from kidney disease and was just undergoing treatment. Like Mike, he took morphine.
