Mika Häkkinen

Mika Hakkinen, aka Flying Finn, is recognized as one of the greatest Formula 1 drivers. Some see his professional merits in champion titles, others speak of the perseverance and courage that are inherent in a race car driver: in 1995, Hakkinen crashed at the Australian Grand Prix, but, coming out of a coma, again sat behind the wheel of the car.

Mika Pauli Hakkinen was born on September 28, 1968 in the Finnish city of Vantaa in the family of taxi driver Harry and secretary Aila. Grew up with his sister Nina.

When Hakkinen was 5 years old, his parents took him to a karting club. The boy immediately got into an accident, but continued the race. The perseverance and passion that the young man demonstrated on the track convinced mom and dad to send their son to the section. Hakkinen's first go-kart was once owned by Henri Toivonen, one of the youngest world rally champions.

In 1975, 7-year-old Hakkinen made his go-kart debut and won. The competition, however, had a regional scale. A really serious victory took place in 1981, when the future Formula 1 pilot climbed to the highest step of the podium in the Finnish Championship.

In 1998, TV journalist Erje Honkanen became the wife of Mika Hakkinen. On December 12, 2000, they had a son, Hugo Ronan, and on May 12, 2005, their daughter, Aina Julia. In the end, personal life did not work out: in 2008, Honkanen filed for divorce.

The vicious circle of defeats was interrupted (but not closed!) In 1993 when Hakkinen moved to McLaren. At the Japanese Grand Prix, he won the first podium of his career, finishing in 3rd place. In 1998, Hakkinen won 11 podiums out of 16 (including 8 first places), in 1999 - 10 podiums. Such results brought him world titles. And this despite the fact that the competition in "Formula 1" Hakkinen were legends - Michael Schumacher, David Coulthard, Jacques Villeneuve, Jean Alesi and others.

After the 2001 championship, Flying Finn announced his retirement.
