Biography

A talented person is talented in everything. Linkin Park co-founder and vocalist Mike Shinoda knows a lot: he writes songs, scripts and music for films, draws, produces, acts as an MC.

After the death of Chester Bennington, the musician nevertheless found the strength to inform on Twitter that life goes on and the band will exist. The song Over Again from the new album is an illustration of what friends have gone through and how Linkin Park prepares for a show in memory of Chester.

fact

Childhood and youth

Michael Kenji Shinoda was born in February 1977 on the Pacific coast, in Agura Hills. The small town is known for being the home of two Linkin Park members, Michael and Brad Delson. The head of the Leslie family is Japanese, Kim's mother, according to some sources, although she is Native American, by blood she is half Russian, half Hungarian. Mike has a brother, Jason, but the elder calls the younger Jay.

Shinoda is considered a yonsei - this is how the Japanese call the fourth generation of compatriots born in the United States. As the singer himself said, his ancestors know very well what it means to live on a reservation, when, after the bombing in Pearl Harbor, the Japanese living in America were forcibly placed in internment camps. Leslie Shinoda and four cousins of the singer passed through such a camp. Kenji's composition from The Rising Tied album of the solo project Fort Minor is dedicated to the time of racial discrimination.

They put Mike at the piano early - at the age of 3, began traditionally - with classical music, later the sphere of interests moved towards blues, hip-hop and jazz. Favorite artists included Grandmaster Flash, Run DMC, Eric B And Rakim and LL Cool J.

In high school, Shinoda bought a synthesizer, began to write beats, together with his classmate Brad Delson turned his own room into the first recording studio. At the same time, the future rocker mastered playing the guitar. Soon drummer Rob Burdon joined the friends, the guys created a band called Xero and moved to conquer the musical Olympus.

His passion for drawing led the young singer to the Pasadena Art Center College of Design. In the future, Shinoda fully applied his artistic and design skills in parallel with his musical ones. The album covers for Linkin Park, Styles of Beyond, the band's website design and the Linkin Park Underground fan club T-shirts are all his fantasy.

In college, Mike met another future member of the collective, Joseph Khan. Dalson, who was studying at the university at the time, found a kindred spirit in David Michael Farrell, with whom he lived in the same room and occasionally played the guitar. New friends quickly join Xero, which, after their appearance, is renamed Hybrid Theory. The group, which later became popular under the name Linkin Park, would finally form by 1999.

Producers and labels bypassed Hybrid Theory, and the musicians took up their own promotion, engaging in almost viral self-promotion. The guys posted demos on the Web, wrote messages on the websites of other teams, sent T-shirts, cassettes, stickers to everyone who wanted to. As Bourdon recalled, friends dragged packages from a nearby post office and filled his apartment with parcels. In the end, the team managed to convince Warner Bros. Records.

Music

Shinoda admitted that he first "got a kick" from writing music as a child, when his composition won first place in the competition. The realization that he should have a musical biography came to Mike after the performance of DJ Killer B, which featured the cult metal band Anthrax and the radical African American hip-hop group Public Enemy.

Until Chester joined the group, Mike performed vocals, and also invited friends for this purpose. Bennington was pointed out by another failed vocalist, saying that if this guy is not hired, then "you are just idiots." The mixture of rock and rapper voices, accompanied by samples from DJ Joe, gave the band a unique sound.

Chester Bennington remains Linkin Park's true idol, and only true fans know that Mark Wakefield was the soloist before his appearance. The vocalist left the band, believing that the guys would not achieve success. Before leaving, Wakefield wrote a number of songs from Linkin Park's debut album Hybrid Theory, including Crawling, Runaway, A Place for My Head, and Forgotten.

The album was an incredible success both financially and in terms of the rise in popularity of the group. In the "Billboard" charts, the disc started from 16th place and rose to the second. Mike realized his dream of getting a Grammy, first being nominated for Best Rock Album, and in 2002 picking up the coveted gramophone for the hard rock performance of the song Crawling. A year later, the video for this composition was awarded the Grammy.

By Christmas 2000, Hibrid Theory had achieved gold status in America. In January 2003, the single One Step Closer climbed to number 24 on the UK charts, with Mike's favorite song "Papercut" at number 14.

To date, the work of Shinoda's main brainchild Linkin Park is estimated in millions, whether it be the number of views on YouTube, circulation of albums, “likes” on Facebook. Not to mention the earned fortune. The cult band has won 10 MTV Europe Music Awards, 3 - World Music Awards, 4 - MTV Video Music Awards, 6 wins in the "Favorite Alternative Artist" nomination from the American Music Awards.

Shinoda's solo career is no less successful. In 2005, Mike released The Rising Tied as part of the Fort Minor project, created to implement ideas that did not fit with Linkin Park's style. The single Where'd You Go peaked at # 4 on the Billboard Hot 100, and the clip has amassed millions of views on YouTube.

In addition, the musician owns The Shinoda Imprint and Machine Shop Recordings labels.
