Biography
High school student in Long Island, Michael Cuesta studied photography and design at the School of Visual Arts in New York and produced, from 1992, numerous advertising spots. At the end of the 90s, he wrote, with his brother and a college friend, an autobiographical tale about youth in the American suburbs. This will be the screenplay for his first feature film, Long Island Expressway (LIE), noticed at Sundance in 2001 and awarded at Deauville in 2002. With a disturbing mix of delicacy and daring, he evokes the ambiguous relationship between a boy from fifteen to a fifties played by Brian Cox.
After this brilliant attempt, Michael Cuesta signed in 2006 Twelve and holding, his second feature film, also presented in Deauville. Through the portrait of three 12 year old kids, upset by the death of the twin brother of one of them, the filmmaker continues to explore with sensitivity the universe of adolescence, "this delicate passage , delicious and awkward " .
The following years are mainly characterized by a detour towards television. For the HBO channel, Cuesta directs a few episodes of the original Six Feet Under series, a moving chronicle of a family at the head of a funeral director. Later, it was the Showtime channel that asked for him, for successful fictions like Dexter or Homeland,
In 2011, the filmmaker returned to the cinema screens with the musical drama Roadie, which he co-wrote with his brother Gerald and eight years after 12 and Holding, in 2014, he offered the lead role of Kill the Messenger, biopic of the journalist of Gary Webb investigation, to Jeremy Renner.
