Biography
Michael Chernus studied drama at the prestigious Juilliard School in New York City before subsequently shining on the stage. Very talented, he received in 2011 an Obie Award, a renowned award on Broadway for his performance in the play In The Wake by Lisa Kron.
In parallel with his theater career, Michael appears on the small screen in Mercy Hospital, Damages, New York Special Unit or The Big C. He also regularly lends his stature in small roles in the cinema, illustrating himself in different registers. The actor dabbled in drama with The Messenger alongside Ben Foster and Woody Harrelson before joining Agents J and K in the fantasy comedy Men In Black III. He then slips into the shoes of Arthur Ingman in the action-spy film Jason Bourne: The Legacy starring Jeremy Renner.
In 2013, after having rubbed shoulders with Tom Hanks in Captain Phillips under the direction of Paul Greengrass, he joined the cast of the successful prison series Orange Is the New Black. Michael plays Cal Chapman, the brother of the imprisoned heroine Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling). This role made him known to the general public who finally put a name on Chernus' round, bearded face. The actor continues his momentum by appearing in the Elementary, The Good Wife, Nurse Jackie or Manhattan series while alternating with roles in the cinema in Welcome Back by Cameron Crowe or Mistress America with Greta Gerwig.
2016 is a pivotal year for the 39-year-old American. Indeed, the latter was chosen to lend his features to the Handyman (The Tinkerer in VO), one of the villains of Spider-Man Homecoming with Tom Holland in the role of the weaver. The character, whose real name is Phineas Mason, is a genius inventor who has made weapons his specialty. Operating behind his cover, an old radio repair shop, the scientist secretly develops various gadgets, notably for Le Vautour, which will be played by Michael Keaton.
