Biography
Director of Scottish origin expatriated in the United States, Michael Caton-Jones frequents the punk world at the end of the 70s before working at the Victorine studios in Nice. Having left for London to become a writer, he worked for a time as a stage operator before entering the British National Film School. As soon as he left school, he started as a director for English television.
It is from a political news item that in 1988 he shot his first film, Scandal, in which he notably directed John Hurt, Ian McKellen and Bridget Fonda. A large number of English actors had refused to appear in the film due to its sulphurous content. Two years later, Caton-Jones directs an equally impressive cast (Matthew Modine, Billy Zane, Eric Stoltz, David Strathairn, John Lithgow ...) in Memphis Belle, epic war drama around an American bomber, adapting again a true story.
With Doc Hollywood he works with Bridget Fonda for the second time, while Michael J. Fox plays a young plastic surgeon from Beverly Hills. The following year he directed two big stars, one confirmed, the other still in the process of becoming, in Secret Wounds: Robert De Niro and the very young ... Leonardo DiCaprio. In 1995 he directed Rob Roy, named after the famous Scottish chef embodied here on screen by Liam Neeson, a film which also marks the director's reunion with his favorite actor John Hurt.
The Jackal marks Michael Caton-Jones' foray into the action film, with this muscular encounter between Bruce Willis and Richard Gere, remakefrom a film by Fred Zinnemann. The rest of his filmography is marked by a desire to mix a big spectacle cinema and a more intimate cinema. Father and cop belongs to the second category, and allows Caton-Jones to find Robert De Niro, playing a cop investigating a murderer who is none other than his own son.
The year 2005 accentuates the bipolarity of his career. On the one hand he shoots Shooting Dogs where John Hurt stars, a realistic and documented evocation of an ethnic massacre that took place in Rwanda. On the other hand he returns to popular cinema with Basic instinct 2, the sequel to Paul Verhoeven's film. The main character is still played by Sharon Stone but this time the story takes place in London,
