Michael Apted

Michael Apted studied law and history at Cambridge University and began a career as a librarian at Granada Television. During the sixties, he directed several episodes of the television series Coronation street . Some of them won BAFTA Awards and Michael Apted himself got one in the Best Serial Director category.

He discovered a certain interest in documentary very early on and notably contributed to the character study Seven Up! produced in 1963 by Paul Almond, in which several seven-year-old children from various social backgrounds are questioned about their lives. Michael Apted extends the experience and decides to interview the same people again every seven years, making this project the longest character study ever to be filmed with six new films that will follow the subjects until they turn 49.

Apted turned to cinema in 1973 and directed his first feature film, Triple Echo, in which a young woman hides a deserter by passing him off as her sister. In 1979, he continued with Agatha, a drama played by Dustin Hoffman and Vanessa Redgrave and about the mysterious disappearance of Agatha Christie in 1926.

In 1980, Michael Apted moved to the United States and shot his first Hollywood film, Nashville Lady, on the life of country singer Loretta Lynn. This feature film won seven Oscar citations, including Best Picture, and Sissy Spacek won Best Actress. In 1983, he directed William Hurt and Lee Marvin in Gorky Park, a detective film set in Moscow.

In 1987, Michael Apted traveled to Rwanda and Kenya to film Sigourney Weaver and the Gorilla monkeys in the mist. This evocation of the life of the anthropologist Dian Fossey allows the actress to be cited at the Oscar. In the same vein, the filmmaker directs Jodie Foster as a young savage in the melodrama Nell (1994). The brilliant performance of this one earned him to be in turn cited at the Oscar.

Michael Apted also devotes himself to the thrillerby directing Coeur de Tonnerre (1992), in which Val Kilmer investigates the murder of a Sioux Oglala, Blink (1994), where Madeleine Stowe plays a blind man struggling with a mysterious serial killer, Emergency Measure (1996 ), in which Hugh Grant is intrigued by the death of a homeless man with strange symptoms, or Never Again (2002) where Jennifer Lopez leads a bitter struggle against an abusive husband. The British-born director made his contribution to the James Bond series in 1999 by directing the new adventures of agent 007 in The World is Not Enough.

Despite his many fictions for the big screen, Apted does not forget the documentary genre and devotes himself to it regularly throughout his career by varying the subjects. He notably carried out a study on different artists in Inspirations (1997), then on scientists in Me & Isaac Newton (1999).

After filming the historical drama Amazing Grace (which remained unseen in France), he tried his hand at fantasy film for the needs of the third installment of the Chronicles of Narnia in 2010.
