Merzak Allouache followed in 1964 film studies in the direction section of the National Institute of Cinema of Algiers, where he directed "Crossing", his diploma film. Two years more, the director remains in the dramatic register with Normal !. The film traces the beginnings of the Arab Spring through the story of Fouzi, a young Algerian filmmaker in artistic suffering in a politically and socially shaken country.

In 2013, Allouache remained in the film engaged with Le Repenti. The work comes back to the law known as "Civil Concord" which entered into force in 2000 in Algeria and allows repentant Islamists to reintegrate into society. The film follows the journey of one of them, between redemption and regret.
