The world-famous trance DJ admits that he has always strived to create not just a dance track, but music that conveys drive and can cause goosebumps. The life and career of a German musician almost ended in 2016: after an accident, Van Dyck learned to walk and speak again. Now the DJ is returning to creativity and concert activity.

Matthias Paul (real name of the musician) was born on December 16, 1971 in the city of Eisenhüttenstadt, in the German Democratic Republic. The name of the settlement in German means "city of metallurgical enterprises". The boy was raised by his mother: his father left the family when the child was 4 years old. The family soon moved to East Berlin.

Music has fascinated Matthias since childhood. In an interview with edm.com, the artist revealed that he was a fan of The Smith and wanted to play guitar as the founder of this indie band Johnny Marr. But when he came to a music school, the proposed repertoire, very far from the tastes of the young man, discouraged the desire to master the instrument.

The West German radio stations banned in the GDR, as well as the recordings that could be obtained on the black market, became a real outlet. The fall of the Berlin Wall opened up access to music clubs across the capital. This made an impression on Mattias, close to euphoria.

His debut as a DJ took place in 1991 at the Berlin club Tresor. Taking the pseudonym Paul Van Dyck, Matthias began to actively perform at club parties. The popularity of his work grew and led to the fact that in 1993 he became a resident of the E-Werk club.

However, even being at the console in front of hundreds of people, the musician did not consider the occupation as a profession. As a DJ, he continued to combine club performances with carpenter work.

In 1994, Van Dyck released his debut album. The 45RPM record was released in Germany and four years later in the UK and USA. The track list also includes the song "For An Angel", which has become the calling card of a DJ far beyond Germany and is still included in the rotation of radio stations around the world.

Already in 1995, Van Dyck became a welcome participant in the increasingly popular electronic music festivals. In the same year, he performed at one of these events in Los Angeles in front of 50,000 concert attendees. The success was consolidated by the second album Seven Ways. Music critics began to call Van Dyck "the pioneer of trance music." Some of the tracks on the disc were produced by representatives of the American music business.

At the turn of the millennium, the musician terminated his contract with the record company that had released previous albums, and founded his own company, Vandit Records. She released his third album Out there and back, the compositions on which are marked with more melodic sound than before.

The popularity of the DJ allowed him to go on a world tour. A visit to India inspired his fourth album, Reflections. It came out in 2003. The compositions filled with melancholy, including the single "Nothing but You", attracted the attention of international music critics.

The disc not only took high positions in the national charts of European countries and the USA, but was also nominated for a Grammy as "Best Electronic Music Album".

The fifth album In Between was also successful. Seven guest musicians participated in its creation: Jessica Sutta from Pussycat Dolls, David Byrne from Talking Heads and others. The single "Let Go", featuring Rea Garvey of Reamonn, was later released as a standalone song, and the music video for the song received a large number of views. The sixth album Evolution also featured a large number of collaborations.

Paul met his first wife Natasha at the dawn of his career in 1994. The couple got married in 1997, but they divorced soon after. The musician's second marriage took place only 20 years later. This time, Colombian Margarita Morello became his chosen one. Paul's decision to propose was also influenced by a serious incident that happened to him in 2016.

While playing a set at the Utrecht festival, the DJ stepped on the fabric, which, like the stage cover, was black, and tore off. As a result of an unsuccessful fall, Van Dyck was urgently hospitalized with a double fracture of the spine, concussion and an open skull injury. He remained in a coma for several days.

The musician's speech centers were damaged - he again learned to speak, walk, eat. Paul remained in the hospital for three months. In general, his treatment and rehabilitation took a year and a half, and with some trauma consequences he will have to work until the end of his life.

The musician emphasizes that he would not have gone through what happened alone. He was supported by his fiancée, mother, colleagues and fans around the world. In 2017 Paul and Margarita got married by posting a photo from the celebration on Instagram.

Van Dyke's first performance since leaving the hospital took place in October 2017 in Las Vegas. Doctors were on duty behind the scenes, and the DJ, overcoming his back pain, remained on stage.

As the musician told reporters, most of all he was afraid that due to brain damage he would not be able to feel anything after hearing the music. Fortunately, the fears did not materialize.

In Las Vegas, Paul presented the seventh album From Then On, the release of which had to be postponed due to an accident. The mood of the tracks was strongly influenced by what happened, which can be judged by the titles: "I Am Alive", "While You Were Gone", "Safe Heaven" and so on.

The immense care and support of loved ones inspired the musician to create the composition "Stronger Together", also included in the album.

In 2018, Paul Van Dyck returned to performing at festivals and recitals, but their number had to be reduced. The artist continues to recover from injury.
