Biography
Maria Semyonova is considered the founder of the Slavic fantasy genre. During her biography, she changed many hobbies - from martial arts to the school of psychics, but her life is subordinate to writing books, and she needs new emotions and knowledge only to make the descriptions of fights, fortune-telling, rituals and rituals in novels brighter and more believable.
fact
Childhood and youth
Maria Vasilievna Semenova was born on November 1, 1958 in Leningrad. Her parents were scientists. Already in childhood, the girl felt a craving for literature and began writing stories early, but her father and mother did not approve of creativity, considering it a frivolous occupation.
At the age of 14, Maria became interested in history. It all started with a book by a little-known author about the conquests of the Normans. She greatly impressed the future writer and laid the foundation for her passion for ethnography. According to Semenova, then she read everything she could get her hands on about the Vikings - from fiction to scientific books, after which she became interested in the Slavs.
After school, the girl, under the influence of her parents, entered the Institute of Aviation Instrumentation to obtain a degree in electrical engineering.

Literature
Difficult studies at a technical university did not make her forget about old hobbies: Maria continued to study history books and write stories “on the table”, but once she made up her mind and took the story “Lame Blacksmith” to the publishing house. There she was approved and promised: “We will make a book,” but the debut work did not see the light soon.
In 1985, Maria Semyonova prepared the story “What is Victory” for the almanac “Friendship”. That year, the USSR celebrated the 40th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War, and Soviet censors ordered the work with a "blasphemous" title to be thrown out of the magazine.
In addition to the title, nothing else in it could alert - it was a small story about two kings who argue over which of them defeated whom, but when the publishing house tried to intercede for Mary, an order was received to exclude her from the author's composition. So the young writer had to “go into the shadows,” and the publication of her debut book was postponed indefinitely. Semenova got a job at a research institute as an engineer, but continued to write for herself.
A year later, Maria met two fellow writers - Radiy Petrovich Pogodin and Valery Mikhailovich Voskoboinikov, who encouraged her and persuaded her to continue trying to publish. The writer took the manuscripts to children's magazines and received the consent of the publishers, and a year later her first full-fledged book, "The Swans Fly Away", was published.
In 1992, the writer decided to pursue a literary career in earnest. She resigns from the research institute, joins the Union of Young Writers and offers the publishing house previously written novels (in an interview, she called them "20 years of work, measured in kilograms"). They had no success with the public, and Maria had to switch to translations from English.
She worked under the pseudonym Gali Trubitsyna and translated mainly fantasy about dragons, goblins and elves. Over time, the writer decides to create something similar, but in the Russian style and on the basis of "native" material, using her best practices in ethnography.
This is how the famous "Wolfhound" appeared, which in 1996 was awarded the Belyaev Prize. Initially, it was conceived as a trilogy, but eventually a series of six books was published ("Wolfhound", "The Right to Duel", "Istovik-Stone", "Sign of the Way", "Gemstone Mountains", "Peace on the Road").
After him, Semyonova offered readers old works that had previously been rejected by publishers, but with the success of the first book they got a new chance for life: "Valkyrie", "Swan Road", "Two Kings" and others. Today, Semyonova's bibliography contains dozens of her own books and 13 translations, but contrary to stereotypes, there are relatively few works in the genre of Slavic fantasy among them.
The closest to Semyonova is the genre of the historical novel. She also turned to detectives ("Order", "The same and a skunk", "Year of the Cannibal"), explaining this by the desire to "hooligan". The hero of the Skunk series is a modern folk avenger, following in the footsteps of the elusive Ogre. She also has a popular science historical encyclopedia "We are Slavs!", As well as an artistic retelling of pagan myths "Duel with the Serpent."
In 2005, Semenova received the Aelita Prize, in 2007 - the World of Fiction Prize, and a year later - Roscon. Songs have been written based on her books (for example, "Wolfhound" by the "Melnitsa" group). In "Crime without a statute of limitations" by F. Razumovsky and "Taste of Blood" by E. Milkova, the name of the writer is also on the cover, but she did not take part in writing the text, but only in the development of the original idea.
In co-authorship with Yekaterina Murashova, Maria Vasilievna wrote the novel "Leaving with the Wind" (however, fans note that traces of Semenova's pen are almost invisible in the book), and with Yekaterina Gurova - the cycle "Aratta".
In 2006, the action movie "Wolfhound of the Gray Dogs" was released, based on Semenova's cycle. A year later, the picture entered the list of the highest-grossing films in the Russian box office, grossing $ 17.1 million. Later, the filmography of the writer was replenished with the series Young Wolfhound.
Despite the enthusiasm of the audience, Semyonova herself did not like a single adaptation: according to her, they erased that protest against ignorance of her roots, ethnic and cognitive impersonality that she put into the basis of the books, and the result was "an average incubator fabulous action movie" ... The only thing that Semenova approved was the choice of the performer of the role of Wolfhound (Alexander Bukharov).
fact
Personal life
According to the writer herself, her personal life does not shine with events and is one continuous "not" - not married, no children, and there is no desire for love relationships either. The family of Maria Vasilievna is a father, a cat and two dogs.
Since her youth, she has an unusually many hobbies: in addition to studying Slavic myths, Maria went to aikido in order to accurately describe scenes of hand-to-hand combat in her novels, rode a horse, went sailing and even attended a school of psychics. She needs new impressions to write books.
Semenova is not fond of social networks and does not post photos on the Internet: her fans lead her pages on Instagram and Facebook.
fact
Maria Semenova now
Today Maria Semenova continues to write in the genre of realistic and historical prose. She also writes poetry and occasionally takes up translations from English.
In 2018, at the Moscow International Book Fair, the writer presented a new cycle "Brothers" ("The Tsar's Knight", "The Iron Abyss"). The books are set in the world of "Wolfhound" several centuries before the character was born, shortly after the nuclear disaster. Despite the fact that they also describe the simuran dragons, the God of Thunder, Star Trek, "no Wolfhound's shadow hovers over the novel, this is a completely independent story." Now there are 3 books in the cycle.
