Son of Eugenio Bava, sculptor who became a great cinematographer for silent cinema, Mario Bava was immersed from childhood in the middle of the seventh art. Passionate about painting, he studied at the Fine Arts, specializing in optical special effects, then followed in his father's footsteps by becoming a renowned director of photography in the 1940s and 1950s. During this period, he signed a few short films and documentaries, the Italian sheds light on many feature films including La Bataille de Marathon by Jacques Tourneur, the peplum The Works of Hercules with Steve Reeves, the comedy Gendarmes et thieves or the science fiction film The Danger comes from space.

It was in 1956, when he took the photograph of Riccardo Freda's Vampires, which he completed after the latter's defection, that Mario Bava found himself face to face with fantastic cinema. A genre that he will never leave and of which he will quickly become one of the masters. Four years later, in 1960, he directed his first feature film, The Mask of the Demon, an expressionist work both poetic and Gothic, considered a classic of horror cinema. Bava immediately imposes his unique style, that of a great plastic artist capable of planting a baroque and Gothic atmosphere in a few shots.

After having signed a peplum, Hercules against the vampires, the Italian returned to fantastic cinema, launching the bases of giallo with The Girl Who Knew Too Much, in 1963. His sense of the Gothic, of sadism, of the macabre, his attraction to the supernatural and eroticism, work wonders with The Body and the Whip or the sketch film The Three Faces of Fear. But it is with 6 Women for the Assassin that the filmmaker becomes cult. The film is the pinnacle of giallo, a genre mixing detective, eroticism and horror, of which Mario Bava is considered to be the creator.

If the fantastic genre is the one in which he feels most comfortable, Mario Bava is a jack-of-all-trades who likes to muddy the waters: he may as well have his eyes on the western side (La Strada Per Fort Alamo; 1964) than to tackle the film of Vikings (Duel with the knife; 1965) or to adapt a comic of spy (Danger: Diabolik!; 1968). But whatever his playing field, the Italian imbues it with his baroque style. And it is an understatement to say that his extraordinary cinema is revered by the greatest: Tarantino, Tim Burton or his compatriot Dario Argento, one of his most direct heirs, never cease to proclaim his influence.

Operation Fear, An Ax for the Honeymoon, The Island of Horror ... The years go by, and Mario Bava continues his clearing of fantastic cinema, endlessly innovating. In 1971, it was he who launched the genre of the slasher with The Bloody Bay, well before the Halloween or Friday the 13th sagas which would see the light of day a small decade later. Following more confidential works like Lisa and the Devil and Baron vampire, before Bava signs his last film, Shock, in company of his son Lamberto.

After refusing to sign the special effects for King Kong by producer Dino De Laurentiis, The Italian is working on the preparation of a space opera entitled Star Express. This legend of fantastic cinema, master of the Baroque and creators of fabulous atmospheres, will never have time to complete the feature film, carried away by a heart attack in April 1980.
