In his youth, he began to write poetry, but followed in his father's footsteps and graduated with honors from the Kiev Medical Institute.
In high school, in order to fight back school hooligans, secretly from his family, Sergei took up sambo and succeeded, having received a youth category. But diving became the main hobby of the young man. He took part in underwater scientific expeditions, searching for Bering's guns in the Commander Islands region, and in rescuing the sea beaver population. On one of the expeditions, the young man received a barotrauma and as a result of the operation he lost his eardrum.
Of the medical sciences, genetics and psychiatry turned out to be the most interesting for Sergei. In 1969, the young man entered graduate school at the Kiev Institute of Molecular Biology, and the year before that he married for the first time. Sergei's chosen one was beautiful, but she loved not so much the young Dyachenko as the position of his parents. The man combined his studies with the work of a psychiatrist.
In the early 70s, the future science fiction writer wrote the first great work - the detective novel "Symphony" and was so carried away by its creation that he was almost expelled from graduate school, but was able to finish it and become a researcher at the new Moscow Institute of Genetics. In the mid-70s, the first marriage of Sergei Dyachenko broke up, and the promising head of the scientific laboratory began to study in absentia at the screenwriting department of VGIK.
In 1978, the film of the future science fiction writer "Genetics and Us" won the Grand Prix at the All-Union Film Festival. Sergei's diploma work was the script for a feature film about Nikolai Vavilov. In 1981, Dyachenko finally changed the stable salary of a scientist to the unpredictable fees of a writer. By this time, Sergei married a second time and acquired two sons - Seryozha and Sasha.

Ukraine became an independent state, and the young actress, who previously spoke only Russian, mastered Ukrainian to such an extent that she won a reading competition, and later became a teacher of Ukrainian stage speech. In 1989, Sergei Dyachenko divorced a second time (the reason for the collapse of family life was the intervention of his mother-in-law, who lived with her spouses due to illness) and, leaving the family an apartment in Moscow, returned to Kiev with his beloved dog Zorik. The screenwriter, separated from his sons, suffered from depression and contemplated suicide. At this time, he first saw his future wife.
