Petrosyan worked on her debut work for a total of about 20 years with short breaks. The first chapter of "The House In Which ..." was completed in 1991, but the idea of ​​the work and the characters described in it arose in the woman's head much earlier.

The resulting manuscript was generously presented by Mariam to one of her acquaintances in the capital, thanks to whom the amazing story later ended up on the table of one of the book publishers. The company's employees found the author and offered her cooperation, to which Petrosyan agreed with the condition of being able to finish the final part of the novel. According to her, the work was completed in a frantic rush.

According to one version, the inspiration for the creation of the "House" was a two-room apartment in the capital, which became a haven for a short time for Mariam and her husband. Armenian students lived in one of the rooms. For the purpose of comfortable coexistence in a relatively small area, young people composed a whole set of rules, which they hung on one of the walls of the apartment. Everyone respected the requirements and tried not to violate them.

The unusual book tells the story of a kind of orphanage where children with disabilities live. Mystical and mysterious events take place in the boarding school. In the center of events is a boy nicknamed the Smoker, who could not find a common language with his classmates, since they, in his opinion, are very hypocritical and deceiving.

The young hero lives quietly in the House, unaware of all the secrets of this place. The child manages to get acquainted with the mysterious boarding school only after he is transferred to another class. Readers are given a unique opportunity to get to know all the inhabitants of the mysterious orphanage and immerse themselves in the atmosphere of secrets and mysteries in which the brave hero is.

The house has its own set of rules and foundations, and violations have consequences. Each inhabitant has its own nickname, and it is allowed to call each other only by these invented names. The main fear of the little guests is to leave the house to which they are so attached. Outside the walls of the institution, they expect to see only enmity and misunderstanding. After each graduation, various troubles and failures occur with the pupils of the boarding school.

In addition to the fear of leaving the boundaries of their permanent place of residence, children are afraid of a parallel reality, which is in the boarding school itself and keeps them in emotional tension. The most curious children prefer to travel to another space and can even stay there for an unlimited amount of time.

There are also other patients who are also called in a special way - jumpers, but their main difference is that they accidentally enter another space. The physical shell of the young heroes is in a coma, but the mind is already being transferred to another universe. You can live in a fairy-tale world for many years, but in reality only a day or a week passes.

Before the very end of the story, the children had to make a difficult decision. They decided to demolish the building, so their graduation was the last one for the boarding school. After the news of the closure of the orphanage, most of the classmates, although they were afraid, left for the long-forgotten world where they came from. Some of the patients decided to be transported to a parallel universe and enjoyed more perfect conditions for existence, because even time they could dispose of themselves.

Probably, the characters of the book, written in the genre of magical realism, are the hidden sides of the personality of the writer, which are difficult to see with the naked eye. The parallel reality, where the residents of the orphanage went, is an inaccessible and inexplicable space, visible only to Petrosyan herself. For this reason, the novel seemed so attractive and interesting to readers.

Despite this, some literary critics did not take the work very well. The woman was presented with the fact that for the disclosure of her artistic work she chose a not very ethical and humane method - to write about disabled people, some of whom had mental disabilities.

Other critics were "strained" by the understatement and incompleteness of the book in general and the title in particular. Since Mariam did not prefer to explain everything, the readers had to guess a lot on their own. The work was published in 2014. Mariam announced that she did not intend to ignore the statement that she would not write any more novels. In part, the author kept her promise - the woman appropriated the authorship of "Fairy Tale" to one of her friends and the author of the idea of ​​the work in combination, Naira Murian.

According to the writer, the book was originally drawn, and only after that the text was formed. Despite the fact that Mariam is a professional artist herself, she entrusted Naira to create the illustrations for the new novel. The plot of the tale tells the story of a little boy named Top, who found a non-standard puppy - dragonfly wings were located on his back. A truly sincere and strong friendship was struck between the child and the animal.

Mariam Petrosyan is happy in her personal life - she is the wife of Artashes Stamboltsyan. The married couple is the parents of two children - Mikhail and Sergey. Interesting fact: in the family of a talented woman there is another artist - great-grandfather Martiros Sarian.
