De son véritable nom Sophia Cecelia Kalos, Maria Callas est une célèbre cantatrice d'origine grecque.
Elle n'a que huit ans lorsqu'elle commence à prendre ses premières leçons de chant. Le chef d'orchestre Georges Sebastian est effaré le jour où on lui présente cette fille myope comme une taupe. Mais après l'avoir écoutée, il lui dit simplement: "Vous avez du talent". Et elle répond, non moins simplement, "Je sais".
A quatorze ans, Maria part pour Athènes suivre les cours d'Elvira de Hidalgo. Sept ans plus tard, lorsqu'elle revient aux Etats-Unis, elle a une des plus belles voix du monde. Ses caprices de stars seront célèbres dans le monde entier et sa liaison avec le milliardaire Onassis contribuera encore à étoffer sa légende.
De janvier 1964 à mai 1965, la Diva chante Médea, Norma et Tosca sur les scènes de Paris, New York et Londres. C'est d'ailleurs à Covent Garden qu'elle fera ses adieux à son public le 5 juillet 1965. Maria Callas devient alors professeur à la Julliard School de New York.
En 1969, le cinéaste italien Pier Paolo Pasolini tourne Médée et lui offre le rôle principal. Ce sera l'unique incursion de la cantatrice dans le monde du cinéma. En 1973, elle se lance dans une tournée internationale de récitals mais sa voix, désormais trop abîmée, l'oblige a arrêter. En novembre 1974 elle apparaît pour la dernière fois sur scène à Sapporo au Japon. Maria Callas se retire ensuite dans son appartement parisien. Après une tentative de suicide en 1975, elle meurt d'une embolie pulmonaire le 16 septembe 1977.
