On December 11, 2017, Margarita was going to go to Kostroma. Dmitry offered to take her in his car. Suspecting nothing, the woman agreed and got into the car. Grachev took her to the forest. There, the jealous man tied the victim to a tree and mocked her for more than an hour, trying to beat out a confession of treason.

The attack was carefully planned. In the trunk of the car lay the pre-purchased instruments of crime. Having pulled the harnesses tightly, Grachev set in motion an ax and cut off Rita's hands. The victim recalls that Dmitry knew exactly how long the harnesses could be held. She also realized that he had taken her to the hospital not out of pity, but because a confession could reduce the time.

Moscow surgeons performed a miracle during the operation. The left hand was found at the crime scene, and the doctors were able to sew it into place. The motor function was partially restored. And Margarita has a bionic prosthesis on her right hand.

Irina Sheikina made the case public, so that the offender would not escape punishment. Perhaps thanks to the hype in the federal media, it was possible to deprive the sadist of parental rights for both children. The court sent Grachev to a strict regime colony for 14 years. Despite the convicted person's appeals, the verdict remained unchanged. A criminal case was also opened against the district police officer who refused assistance.

In October 2019, Margarita Sheikina, together with the Komsomolskaya Pravda publishing house, presented a book entitled Happy Without Hands. In it, the author talks about her biography, describes the tragedy and how she learns to live in new conditions.
