Biography
Marco Bellocchio leaves the University to join the Academy of Dramatic Art in Milan before going through the Experimental Cinema Center in Rome and the Slade School of Fine Arts in London. After a few short films he made his first feature in 1965: Les Poings dans les Pockets, noticed by critics.
Breaking with neorealism, the filmmaker creates baroque and committed works that vitriolize the pillars of Italian society: religion (Au nom du pere, 1971), family (Le Saut dans le vide, 1979), and army (La Marche triumphant, 1976). He shows great loyalty to his collaborators, in particular actors like Lou Castel, whom he discovered, or Michel Piccoli and Anouk Aimée, both acting prizes at Cannes in 1980 for Le Saut dans le vide. His subversive films are surrounded by a scent of scandal like the Devil in the body who stirred festival-goers in Cannes because of a fellatio scene.
Marco Bellocchio adopted a more psychoanalytic and less provocative approach to his characters from the 80s with Les Yeux, la bouche and Henri IV, le roi fou (1984). He is also more frequently inspired by literary works such as La Nourrice, adapted from a tale by Luigi Pirandello, and selected at the Cannes Film Festival. But, at 60, Bellocchio, continues to create controversy in Italy. In 2002, he aroused the ire of the Vatican with a new film on the Catholic Church, The Smile of My Mother with Sergio Castellitto, also presented on the Croisette, and, two years later, by reviewing the assassination of Aldo Moro in Buongiorno, notte, presented in Venice, Bellocchio creates a new controversy in a country still marked by the "years of lead".
Three years later, he returns with The Director of Weddings, a film where a director on the run meets three mysterious characters, and Sorelle, which he will follow in 2010 with Sorelle May. These two films are followed by Vincere, a biopic about Benito Mussolini's mistress and the rise of fascism in Italy, proving that he has lost none of his bite. The film was presented in competition at the Cannes Film Festival in 2009, chaired that year by Isabelle Huppert - an actress he directed three years later in Sleeping Beauty, a postulate centered around the controversy of euthanasia.
