Biography
Marc Caro was born in Nantes, like Jules Verne, whose books feed his taste for science fiction which will influence his artistic line. Marc Caro, artist with eclectic talents, first illustrated himself as a designer and editor in the 1970s for the magazine Métal Hurlant and produced comics with his companion and co-writer Gilles Adrien, T.OT. in 1981 and In Vitro in 1987. In 1974, while Marc Caro came to present his review created from the animated film Fanstamagorie at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival, he met Jean-Pierre Jeunet. This meeting marks the beginning of a long collaboration which will allow Marc Caro to take his first steps in cinema.
From their artistic collaboration will be born the animated short films L'Evasion, Le Manège as well as The Bunker of the last burst, a non-animated fantastic short film for which Marc Caro has invested himself on all fronts. For more than a year, he made the weapons and clothes of the characters with Jean-Pierre Jeunet, and he appeared for the first time as an actor. Both then get down to writing La Cité des Enfants Perdus, the script of which will remain in the drawers for a long time for lack of money to put it together.
In the meantime, Marc Caro has directed several animated or experimental short films on his own, sometimes using computer-generated images, most of which are part of a strange and surreal universe, Rude Raid, Le Défilé, Maître cube, La Concierge dans l ' staircase, Méliès 88: The topologist (TV).
In the 90s, he put his talents as a graphic artist and designer at the service of advertising spots for Reebok, he directed a video clip for the music group Indochine, and in 1992, he artistically participated in the opening ceremony of the Albertville Winter Olympics.
Marc Caro reunited with Jean-Pierre Jeunet in 1991 for Delicatessen, their first joint feature film that would shake up the French cinematographic landscape and offer them international and national success. In 1992, they won the César for best first work and the César for best original or adaptation screenplay. 14 years after writing the script, they manage to make La Cité des Enfants Perdus, which is less successful despite the important work done on computer graphics.
Following these two experiences with feature films, Marc Caro and Jean-Pierre Jeunet decided to move on to personal projects on their own. Marc Caro collaborates with Jan Kounen's Vibroboy as artistic director, participates in the design of the characters of Vidocq (2001) and draws the hieroglyphs of Blueberry in 2004.
After having to abandon the adaptation project, of the poem La Chasse au Snark by Lewis Caroll, mixing real images and animated synthetic images, for lack of budget, Marc Caro directed in 2008, his own science fiction feature film Dante 01. Accustomed to the artistic direction, Marc Caro takes care of the direction for the first time actors. He thus signs his first collaboration with Lambert Wilson.
