The hockey player entered the main team of the adult SKA at the age of 22 and at the same time had vague prospects, remaining the third - “hopeless” goalkeeper in the team. When, due to the club's financial problems, the main goalkeeper of the army team Valery Ivannikov moved to Magnitogorsk “Metallurg”, Maxim seized the opportunity and played a series of matches that really launched his career.

The athlete worked in the SKA system for 8 years, and in 2002 he moved to Omsk, where he joined the ranks of HC Avangard. It was in the “hawks” that Sokolov achieved the most significant titles in his sports biography.

In 2004, Omsk citizens became the triumphs of the Russian championship, and Maxim was recognized as the best goalkeeper of the 2003/2004 season and won the Golden Slam - a trophy awarded to the best six players in the national championship. In 2005 "Avangard" became the first owner of the European Champions Cup, having won in the final match against the Finnish team "Karpyat".

Following his club successes, the goalkeeper was called up to the Russian national team, with which he went to the Olympics in Turin in 2006, but returned from there without awards. Subsequent seasons Sokolov spent in SKA, “Metallurg” and Chelyabinsk “Traktor”, and ended his playing career in Nizhnekamsk “Neftekhimik”.

In 2013, Maxim announced that he was leaving the hockey rink and moved to the coaching bridge of the Khimki HC Atlant. After working for a year in the Moscow region, the man returned to his native SKA club, but this time with the ambitions of a mentor.

The hockey player has been married to his wife Irina for 20 years, but for the last 4 years the couple have lived separately. The goalkeeper himself has repeatedly said in an interview that it is difficult for a professional athlete who is on the road to be an exemplary family man and pay sufficient attention to raising children.

The sons of the Sokolovs, Maxim and Arseny, go in for sports, and the elder followed in his father's footsteps and was preparing to become a professional goalkeeper, speaking for the SKA youth club. Younger Arseniy also tried himself in hockey, but later changed his hobby and switched to fencing.

On June 13, 2019, a tragedy occurred in the Romanovka cottage village of the Leningrad Region in the house of the Sokolov family. The news that his son had killed his own mother excited all the media.

At first, suspicion fell on the eldest son Maxim. Younger Arseny said that his brother threatened to kill him, after which the guy ran away from home and turned to the neighbors. Returning to the house, he found the body of his mother with a slit throat and next to his older brother in an unconscious state with wounds on his body. While Maxim Sokolov Jr. is being held in intensive care, Arseny is under police supervision and is among the suspects.

The father of the family had previously expressed concern about the growing up of his sons, but no one could have predicted such a turn of events. It is known that the eldest son was seen by a psychologist and had a depressive disorder, but friends and teammates did not notice anything special and said that he was a calm and friendly guy.

The hockey player, as expected, does not comment on the events that happened, but his mother expressed her attitude to the situation, taking the side of her grandchildren and expressing bewilderment about the behavior of Irina, who was able to provoke her son to such an act. The woman mentioned that the boy suffered leukemia as a child and was only miraculously begged from God.

After finishing his playing career in 2013, Maxim began to work as a coach. Since 2014, Sokolov has been cooperating with the club that gave him a pass to the big sport - SKA from St. Petersburg. At first, the man coached goalkeepers, and then moved to the position of the mentor of SKA-1946, who plays in the MHL. Now at his disposal an expanded set of functions, and the number of charges includes field players.

After the terrible events that happened in the athlete's family, the club expressed condolences to him and promised full support. Earlier, the "army men" showed their honorable attitude to the goalkeeper by introducing him to the HC SKA Gallery of Fame and placing his photo and license plate under the roof of the arena.
