Afinogenov's every day was scheduled by the hour. He managed to attend lessons at school, do his homework, go to hockey and swimming training, and also did athletics.

A friend Alexander Stepanov helped the athlete to arrange his personal life, who invited Maxim to a tennis match held in Paris. By the decision of the team management, he was sent to the Rochester Americans farm club, where he won the title of top scorer and was accepted back to the Sabers.

It was also not easy for Afinogenov to settle in the city. At first everything around him seemed gloomy, gray and boring. But gradually Maxim got used to American traditions, imbued with the local culture. He easily found a common language with the team, began to travel outside Buffalo, visited New York.

In subsequent years, the young man continued to play for the American team. He spent his best season in 2000-2001, when he scored 78 points and advanced to the playoffs. During the lockout in 2005, Maxim managed to play for Dynamo again, that year the club won the main prize of the Russian championship.

Afinogenov was repeatedly involved in matches for the Russian national team. In its composition, he became the bronze medalist of the Olympic Games and won silver at the World Championship. Achievements as an NHL player during this period include the legendary goal against Tampa Bay in 2003.

After his return Afinogenov signed a contract with St. Petersburg SKA. Alas, he was not destined to become a star of the Continental Hockey League (KHL), because a chain of injuries and failures began in the player's biography. He barely had time to go out on the ice and immediately went back for treatment. The main achievement during this period is participation in the 2011 All-Star Game. At the tournament, he sent 3 goals into the goal and made an assist.

But Maxim failed to prove himself more on the ice, so after 3 seasons he moved to Vityaz Podolsk.
