Biography
Over the years, the American metal band Machine Head has developed their own style, mixed with different shades of "heavy" music - thrash, groove and heavy. Inheriting the traditions of the best representatives of the genre, the guys brought their own traits to its culture - the technicality and brutality of drums, rap elements and alternatives. Machine Head are the brightest representatives of the new wave of American heavy metal, who influenced the evolution of the style of dozens of modern bands.

Creation history and composition
Machine Head was the name of the album released in 1972 by the legends of the British rock scene Deep Purple. Ten out of ten hard rock fans will say that it was he who gave the name to the group, formed in 1991 in the American Oakland. However, Robb Flynn - the band's founder and frontman - claims that he invented the name for the team by accident, without being inspired by any examples.

The history of Machine Head began to be written by Robb and his buddy Adam Deuce, who played bass. Flynn had previously worked in another group, but he wanted independence. Therefore, I decided to organize my own project. The team recruited guitarist Logan Maider and drummer Tony Costanza. With this composition, the guys began rehearsals and recording a demo, songs for which were composed by Robb.
The first performances in bars and clubs invariably ended in booze, but the demo came out so fresh and convincing that Roadrunner Records signed Machine Head without ever seeing the musicians live. Having acquired producers, the young metalheads were ready to record their debut album, which brought success, but led to the first disagreements in the team. In 1994, Tony Costanza left the band and was replaced by Chris Kontos.
However, the new drummer did not last long: a year later he was replaced by Walter Ryan, but he also fled Machine Head even faster than his predecessor. The turnover in the drum position ended with the arrival of Dave McClain, who came in 1995 from the Arizona thrash metal band Sacred Reich.

By the late 1990s, Robb and his buddies had achieved star status and a bonus in the form of alcohol and drug problems. When Logan Maider completely lost control, his place was taken by guitarist Aru Luster, who left the band after 4 years due to creative differences. Since 2001, this position has been played by Phil Demmel, Flynn's longtime friend and colleague.
For over 10 years Machine Head was a stable quartet, until its founder Adam Deuce left the group in 2013. Since then, Jared McChern became the bassist, who still plays in the band. The last lineup updates came in 2019, when Dave McClain and Phil Demmel left the team at the same time. In the fall, after auditioning for the applicants, Machine Head recruited a guitarist named Vaclav Keltyk and drummer Matt Elston into its ranks.

Music
Machine Head's music was born of the energy of chaos that Robb Flynn absorbed and transformed during the 1992 California street riots. The performer recalled the pogroms in Los Angeles, during which fifty people died. Aggression and seething energy, which was transmitted to the musician, resulted in the songs that made up the debut album Burn My Eyes, released in 1994.
The release proved to be a successful and best-selling Roadrunner Records label ever. The lyrics on social issues were imbued with a depressing atmosphere, and the music was an explosive mixture of rage and audacity, sustained in the genres of groove, thrash and hip-hop. The tour in support of the record lasted 20 months, after which Machine Head decided to continue the discography.

After recording The More Things Change in 1997, the musicians were on their first world tour. The third album, 1999's The Burning Red, was a success and solidified the performers' reputation as masters of groove metal and alternative. The collective did not escape criticism: the material was called imitative and commercial. The record did sell in huge numbers, but Machine Head claimed that this was not their goal in itself. Metalists tried to find a new sound, believing that the previous albums were too similar to each other.
The Burning Red gave fans such hits as From This Day, Silver and The Blood, The Sweat, The Tears. The main themes in them are still personal experiences and social contradictions - violence, cruelty and lawlessness, and the leading tonality is protest and rage.
In the 2000s, Machine Head continued to record albums, shoot videos and perform concerts, becoming the classics of nu metal. In 2019, the group celebrated its 25th anniversary by going on a tour of Europe, which attracted old members Chris Contos and Logan Maider.

Machine Head now
The band's last album, Catharsis, was released in 2018. Since then, the guys have released several singles - Do or Die in 2019 and Circle the Drain in 2020. The musicians continue to actively tour, but due to the coronavirus pandemic, concerts in Europe had to be postponed. The Americans have posted the updated schedule of performances on the official website. According to plans, the metalheads will delight European fans in the fall of 2020.
