Lyon was born on May 5, 1940 in Moscow in a simple Jewish family of a civil engineer Moisei Aronovich Polyak and an employee of the Soviet bureau Poli Moiseevna Polyak. When the baby was three years old, the father went missing, and the mother had to pull the baby alone. Little Lyon helped his mother as best he could. At the age of five, a craving for writing awoke in the boy. One of the first stories took up half a page in length and bore the loud title "A novel about rural life."

In his autobiography My Dear, Lyon Izmailov talks about his stepfather. Efim Veniaminovich Babinsky, a recently demobilized senior lieutenant who lost his wife and child in the war, came to Moscow to visit his sister. She introduced her brother in 1947 to Paul Moiseevna. It was difficult for the boy to find a common language with his silent, withdrawn stepfather. Nevertheless, thanks to Efim, the Polyaks lived quite well and even received an apartment in 1967.

Lyon was an excellent student until the eighth grade of school, but adolescence made itself felt. In addition, in those days, it was just that male and female schools were united into secondary schools, which, no doubt, distracted from diligent study. After receiving the certificate, the young man thought about the career of a pop artist. But his mother insisted that every man needs a worthwhile profession, and Lyon went to an aviation technical school.

For two years, from 1960 to 1962, the future satirist worked as a technologist at an enterprise related to the military-industrial complex. And in 1962, the guy entered the Moscow Aviation Institute. S. Ordzhonikidze. He left the institute as a certified design engineer, but this is not the main thing. The main thing is that Lion Izmailov was born in MAI (at first the pseudonym sounded like Izmailov, ie "from MAI", later "i" turned into "y").

As the satirist later liked to joke, during his student days he was educated in two specialties - "design engineer" and "amateur art". And he added that he saved many human lives by writing monologues, and not by designing airplanes.

After graduation, Izmailov worked for a couple of years by profession, continuing to work, as well as study, to combine with creativity. In 1969, the Literaturnaya Gazeta published Lyon's first humorous story "New Mata Hari", and since then the Izmailov surname has been constantly appearing among the authors of the "Club of 12 Chairs" column.

In 1970, writing became his main profession. In 1973-1975 Lyon studied at the Advanced Directing Courses in the workshop of George Danelia. After the course, the certified screenwriter wrote ten plays, two of which were staged. One - "A Difficult Case" - became a TV show.

For several years the satirist has been writing texts for the popular Soviet program "The Baby Monitor". The story "Cool Dnieper in Cool Weather" brought the author the Golden Calf prize, one of three in the humorist's credit. A miniature based on this story was included in the first issue of the Yeralash magazine in 1974. Izmailov's biography as an artist of the spoken genre began in 1979. In the same year, Izmailov became a member of the Writers' Union.

Since 1979, Lion Izmailov has traveled all over the Soviet Union on tour - concerts of the 12 Chairs Club were held in the cities of the USSR from Tashkent to Vladivostok. The writer also performed abroad - in Germany, Turkey, USA, Bulgaria. A short, medium-sized (with a height of 167 cm, the weight of Lyon Moiseevich is 70 kg), at his performances the satirist easily attracted the attention of the audience with his unique humor.

He wrote monologues not only for himself, but also for the artists loved by the people - Yevgeny Petrosyan, Yan Arlazorov, Vladimir Vinokur, Efim Shifrin. For Gennady Khazanov, for example, miniatures "Monument", "Our people", "TV", "Disgusting" were created. In total, Izmailov wrote about four hundred stories and monologues.

In 1984, a collection of stories by Lyon Izmailov "Good Mood" appeared on book shelves. Two years later, a second book appeared - the collection "The Share of Truth", the satirist was co-authored by Valery Chudodeev.

In co-authorship with Vitaly Cheburov, The Four Musketeers were born, and together with Mikhail Zadornov, Lion Izmailov published the book The End of the World, or Good Mood. In 1989-1991, Izmailov and Angelina Vovk hosted the TV show "Adults and Children" on the Ostankino shopping center. From 1991 to 1997 he was the host of the TV programs "Show-dossier" and "Jester with us". In the 90s, Lyon Moiseevich worked in the theater of humor "Plus" as an artistic director. Among other things, the talented author also wrote poetry. Alexander Dobronravov wrote the songs "I'm looking at you", "Stop dreaming" and "And I am so sorry for the summer" to the words of Izmailov.

In an interview with Antenna-Telesem magazine on the eve of his 70th birthday, Lyon Moiseevich called the main event in his life his marriage to Elena Sorokina. And he told the story of his acquaintance.

In 1972, Izmailov and a friend argued that Lyon would easily get acquainted with any girl. We went to the “Journalist” store, where Elena was working, and the satirist immediately stunned the girl with a question: “Philosopher Feuerbach was not brought in?” Frightened and surprised, Elena gave Izmailov a phone number, and three years later the couple got married.

The marriage turned out to be fragile, for the banal "did not agree" in 1978 was followed by a divorce. And five years later, realizing that they could not live without each other, the couple got back together and even got married. Lyon Moiseevich and Elena Petrovna have neither children nor grandchildren.

In 1981, the satirist met the priest Alexander Menem. According to Izmailov, Men, who baptized him in 1982, became the spiritual father of Lyon Moiseevich, replacing his parent who died in the war.
