Biography
The story of Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman and the Cowardly Lion, who went to Oz to fulfill their innermost desires, is known to kids and their parents around the world. But few of them remember that the Emerald City was "built" by children's writer Lyman Frank Baum. His 24-year bibliography has amassed 14 Oz novels, 41 other characters, 83 short stories, over 200 poems, and at least 42 theater scripts.
fact
Childhood and youth
The "father" of Oz was born on May 15, 1856 in the village of Chittenango, New York. He is the seventh of nine children of Cynthia Ann (nee Stanton) and Benjamin Ward Baum, devout Methodists. Only five of their heirs survived to adulthood.
Frank Baum grew up a sickly, effeminate child. He spent his best years at Rose Lawn in Mattidale, New York, surrounded by brothers and sisters, learning the basics with the help of a governess.
In 1868, his parents sent their son to the Peekskill Military Academy. He could not get rid of the bad, as it seemed to the teachers, habit of hovering in the clouds. The pressure from adults provoked psychogenic arrhythmia, and 2 years later the young man returned home.
Frank Baum became addicted to writing along with his younger brother Henry Baum. They published The Rose Lawn Home Journal, which contained not only their stories but also advertisements for local businesses. At the age of 15, Frank Baum became seriously interested in theater. The early stage of his biography is associated with this type of art.

Personal life
On November 9, 1882, Maude Gage, the daughter of Matilda Jocelyn Gage, a famous suffragist of the 19th century, became the wife of Lyman Frank Baum. They had four sons, Robert, Harry Neal, Kenneth and Frank Jocelyn. The photographs that have survived to this day show that the boys are copies of their father.

Baum and Gage's personal lives can be taken as a model. The spouses never parted, if circumstances required - they moved together, put up with the vicissitudes of fate and rejoiced at their achievements.

Books
Before becoming a writer, Frank Baum tried himself as a playwright and actor, edited magazines, raised Hamburg chickens, and ran Baum's Bazaar. At the last one he went bankrupt, because he gave out goods "on credit", and then forgave the customers the debts.
In 1897, Frank Baum published his version of the stories about Mother Goose, a famous character in French and American-English literature. The collection was expected to be a success, allowing the author to quit his job at Baum's Bazaar and concentrate entirely on literature. Catching the wave, Frank Baum wrote Pope Goose: His Book (1899).

The first story about Oz, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900), was considered the best-selling children's book for two years. Having found a gold mine, Frank Baum did not release it until the last days of his life. The series about Oz he created contains 14 books. The final ones in Baum's bibliography The Magic of Oz (1919) and Glinda of Oz (1920) came out after his death.
Frank Baum drew inspiration for his Oz stories from the tales of the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen. He "Americanized" and updated the works of colleagues, removed from them stereotypical characters (for example, dwarfs and genies) and scenes of violence. Therefore, Lyman Frank Baum is often called the "disinfectant of children's literature."
Romance is another element that Frank Baum deliberately overlooked in his stories of Oz. He believed that kids, his main readers, cannot comprehend love, which means that reading about it will not be interesting. However, the writer could not do without lyrics at all. Strictly adjusted doses of romance are found on the pages of the books The Amazing Wizard of Oz, Tik Tok of Oz (1914) and The Scarecrow of Oz (1915).
The stories about the inhabitants and guests of the Emerald City were written for children, but adults also found food for thought. Frank Baum, for example, has advocated women's suffrage. Communication with suffragettes inspired him to write the book "Wonders of Oz" (1904), which tells about the uprising of the female half of the fairy-tale state. When asked directly if his novels about Oz had political overtones, Baum replied:
The stories about the Emerald City have been embodied in dozens of theatrical performances and film adaptations. So, for 293 nights in 1903 and 265 nights in 1904, the musical "The Wizard of Oz" was shown on Broadway. The script for it was written by Frank Baum himself. The stage version was different from the book because it was aimed at adults.

The most famous film adaptation of the tales of the Emerald City is The Wizard of Oz (1939) with Judy Garland as Dorothy. She received two Oscar statuettes. There are more than 10 films in total, including Hollywood's "Oz: The Great and Powerful" (2013) with James Franco as the Wizard.
In addition to the stories of Oz, Lyman Frank Baum's bibliography includes over 40 books about other characters. For example, "The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus" (1902) about how the New Year symbol appeared in the United States. This story first mentions the Burzi forest. Frank Baum wrote six more works about its inhabitants and wonders.

Death
The cause of death of Lyman Frank Baum was a stroke suffered on May 5, 1919. After him, the writer fell into a coma, but briefly came to his senses to address the last words to his wife.
He spoke of the Deadly Desert that surrounds Oz.

On May 6, 1919, Baum passed away. He was buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Glendale, California. In 1953, Maud Gage rested next to the writer. Judging by the photographs, their grave is decorated with a simple tombstone with names and years of life.
