Biography
An architect by training, Luigi Comencini was first interested in the heritage of Italian cinema, participating in a film conservation program (of which he is also a great collector), before becoming a screenwriter (for Lattuada and Germi) and assistant director. He then tried his hand at directing with a few short films. In 1948, he directed his first feature, a fiction entitled Des New Men Are Born. After a few dramas (La Traite des blancs) and a version of Heïdi produced in Switzerland, the filmmaker had his first success with Pain, Amour et Fantaisie (1953), a light comedy carried by the bella ragazza Gina Lollobrigida and the elegant Vittorio From Sica. In front of the public triumph, Comencini realizes a sequel, Pain, Amour et Jalousie.
If the filmmaker likes comedy of manners (La Belle de Rome with Alberto Sordi, one of his favorite actors), he is just as relevant in the historical drama (La Grande Pagaille, which brings together Sordi and Serge Reggiani) . After having sacrificed sketchy films to fashion and directed the final part of the Don Camillo saga (Don Camillo in Russia), Comencini definitely established himself as a great Italian cinema with L'Incompris (1966), an overwhelming melodrama on the suffering of childhood. A few comedies later (including the unforgettable Les Russians will not drink Coca Cola!), He stages a sumptuous Casanova (1969) and a daring and rough adaptation of The Adventures of Pinocchio (a thousand leagues from the prettiness of Disney ), produced for television and then used in the cinema in a shortened version. Once again, childhood is at the heart of the film. Comencini will explore this theme which is dear to him with Eugenio (1980) and Un enfant de Calabre (1987).
In 1972, Comencini delivered a model for a satirical comedy, L'Argent de la Vieille, a charge of rare virulence against class injustices led by an impeccable cast (Bette Davis, Joseph Cotten, Alberto Sordi, Silvana Mangano). At the end of the 1970s, the filmmaker, in full possession of his means, signed some of his greatest films. His filmography was enriched by bitter social dramas (Un Vrai crime d'amore) with grinding humor (La Femme du dimanche), but also by anthological comedies (the chorale Grand bottling).
If the 80s marked the decline of his career (with the failure of La Bohème in particular), they still had some nice surprises in store (the moving Storia, the nostalgic Merry Christmas, Happy New Year).
