Mary Louise Brooks was born November 14, 1906 in Cherryvale, Kansas, United States. She discovered very early a passion for dance and, in 1922, joined the famous company led by Ted Shawn and Ruth St. Denis. Her career then led her, in particular, to the George White's Scandals in 1924 and the Ziegfeld Follies in 1925.

She started on the screen at Paramount in 1925 and quickly became one of the young stars of the firm. She is immediately recognized for her strange beauty, she sports ebony black hair cut to the square, she likes not to smile in front of the camera lens. This film also marks a technical breakthrough that should be underlined: most of the scenes are shot outdoors and on the occasion of a few talking scenes, the director invents the “boom microphone”.

The consecration does not take long to arrive for the young actress: in 1928, she leaves the United States to go and shoot in Europe and therefore goes to Germany to star in Loulou (1929) by the great director Georg Wilhelm Pabst. She embodies an independent woman of modest origin, courtesan and dancer, unable to resist her impulses without being aware of committing evil. She ends up stabbed by Jack the Ripper. At the same time, loved by a married man and coveted by a lesbian, the figure of Loulou causes a scandal and the film is very quickly censored and cut off from several sequences. The increasingly fatal portrait of Louise Brooks is completed with The Diary of a Lost Girl filmed the following year with the same director. She plays the character of Thymiane there, seduced at a very young age by her father's assistant, with whom she becomes pregnant. Denied by her family, she is thus sent to a reformatory from which she quickly escapes. Outside, she learns of the death of her child and decides to surrender to the pleasures of the flesh by joining a brothel.

After these two sulphurous shoots she began her third European film, Augusto Genina Beauty Prize, which, this time, did not obtain the expected success. The film is not distributed in the United States. Now the actress only appears in supporting roles and her beauty is no longer really put forward. From 1936 to 1938, she nevertheless returned to the world of cinema, with two B-series westerns, a feature in Robert Riskin's Le Coeur en fête and a role cut during the editing process in King of Gamblers.by Robert Florey. She retired from the circle of the 7th art when she was only 32 years old. From 1943, she carried on activities as diverse as an actress on the radio, an escort girl or a saleswoman in a department store. She writes with talent some texts dealing with cinema but does not reappear on the screens. The star died of a heart attack on August 8, 1985, in Rochester (New York), but his legend survives.
