Liliana Cavani

A graduate in Classics and Linguistics at the University of Bologna, Liliana Cavani also studies at the Centro sperimentale in Rome. She first worked for Italian television, notably at RAI from 1962 to 1965; she directed several documentaries on the Third Reich, Stalin or the Pétain trial (Primo piano: Philippe Pétain processo a Vichy (1965)).



In 1966, she directed her first feature film, François d'Assise, an evocation of the life of Saint-François d'Assise. She will approach this theme again in 1989 with Francesco, a drama played by Mickey Rourke. In 1970, Liliana Cavani wrote and directed Les Cannibales, a film about totalitarianism and the transgression of prohibitions. These subjects are also present in Portier de nuit (1974), a sulphurous drama on the sadomasochistic relationship between a Nazi torturer (Dirk Bogarde) and his victim (Charlotte Rampling). This film provokes lively controversies like Beyond Good and Evil (1977), which is inspired by the life of Nietzsche. Some would say that the filmmaker betrayed the work of the famous philosopher.



Liliana Cavani continued with the filming of La Peau in 1980. This adaptation of the novel by Curzio Malaparte, which takes place in the city of Naples freed from the fascist yoke, is presented at the Cannes Film Festival in 1981. For the needs of Behind the Door, she collaborates again with Marcello Mastroianni, whom she had directed in La Peau. Liliana Cavani then directs Berlin Affair (1985), an impossible love story between two women in Berlin in 1938.



The director and screenwriter waits five years before filming Without being able to say it (1993), a sentimental drama in which Chiara Caselli and Gaetano Carotenuto play two deaf-mutes in love. In 2001, she directed John Malkovich and Dougray Scott in Ripley's game, a new opus of the adventures of Tom Ripley which will be presented out of competition at the 2002 Venice Film Festival.
