Lev Shapovalov

Lev Ovalov is a Soviet writer, creator of a series of detective novels about Major Pronin. The writer has more than 30 works. He conducted his creative activities under a pseudonym, hiding the name of Shapovalov.

Lev Sergeevich Ovalov was born on August 29, 1905 in Moscow. Shapovalov Sr. died in 1914 at the front of the First World War, so the boy was brought up by his mother and lived with her and his younger brother in the village of Uspenskoye, Oryol province. In his youth, Leo was a ringleader, erudite and initiator of any creative activity. In 1918 he joined the Komsomol and became the head of the Komsomol cell. In 1923, the young man came to Moscow to enter the university. As a student at the medical faculty of Moscow State University, the guy managed to get interested in journalism, which determined Ovalov's further biography.

As an author, he began to publish in the periodicals "Rabochaya Moskva" and "Krestyanskaya Gazeta". While attending the literary section "Antenna", Lev developed his skills. His first independent work was published in 1928. It was the story "Chatter". Having received a graduate diploma, Ovalov started working as an editor in the publications Komsomolskaya Pravda, Molodaya Gvardiya and Vokrug Sveta.

Ovalov's brother Dmitry graduated from a military school and with the rank of lieutenant went to the front of the Great Patriotic War to defend the western border. In 1941 he was captured, then released by the Allies and stayed to live in Europe. Trying to settle in several foreign countries, in 1950 he ended up in Canada and settled in Montreal.

The brothers only established contact in 1966 and began a long correspondence that lasted until 1975. It was difficult to come to the Soviet Union, as well as to leave it abroad. Leo could not see the closest person. Dmitry died and was buried near Montreal in the Russian cemetery

Lev Ovalov survived the exile and at the end of the appointed time he met a woman who changed the personal life of the disgraced writer. Her name was Anna Kotzer. In 1948, when Ovalov was working as a camp doctor, he met a paramedic, a recent graduate of the Yaroslavl medical school, Valentina Klyukina. The wife gave Ovalov four children - two daughters and two sons.

After serving his term, the author remained in exile. Together with his wife, he lived and worked in the Urals, and then in Adygea. In 1956, thanks to numerous appeals and petitions, the writer was rehabilitated, and he returned to Moscow. Once again taking up literary activity, from which he was distracted for long 15 years, Ovalov was able to provide for his loved ones thanks to the published books.

The story "Blue Swords" was written specifically for the magazine "Around the World". It served as the beginning of a series of detective stories about Major Pronin. From 1939 to 1940, six works dedicated to this character saw the light at once. They were published by the editions "Around the World" and "Znamya". As part of the series "Library of the Red Army", the works were released separately. The collection about Pronin was published in 1941. Then the author presented the continuation of the exciting story. It turned out to be the novel "Blue Angel", published in "Ogonyok".

In July 1941, Ovalov was arrested on charges of divulging classified information. The writer was convicted and sent to a labor camp. Throughout the years of exile, he worked in his specialty received at the university.

After rehabilitation in 1956, the author published three novels dedicated to the hero, beloved by the readers, Major Pronin. The work "Lethal Weapon" was also published. Lev Ovalov died on April 30, 1997. The cause of death was diseases concomitant with old age.
