Leonid Kravchuk is the first president of independent Ukraine. Kravchuk's presidency lasted 2.5 years. In the 1991 elections, he went as a non-partisan candidate and received the support of both the majority of the members of the banned communist organization and many National Democrats.

On the first winter day of 1991, the candidate won nearly two-thirds of the vote in direct elections. A week later, the Belovezhsky agreement was signed to end the existence of the USSR.
