Before becoming a musician, Yandel worked in a hairdressing salon. Thoughts about a career as a singer have been visiting the guy for a long time, and in order to embody a long-ripening idea, he connected to this long-time friend Wisin (Juan Luis Morera Luna), an acquaintance from school, and created a duet.

The group was named Wisin & Yandel. Both were close to the reggaeton genre, a musical style that emerged in Puerto Rico in the 1990s under the influence of hip-hop, dance hall and reggae. It is popular in the Latin American Caribbean as well as Latin Americans living in America.

In 1998, the guys got acquainted with DJ Dicky and under his producer took part in the recording of 2 compilations, while the Fresh Productions label was editing. As a result, both received gold status based on sales results. The record company made bets on the artists and offered the guys to release their debut album "Los Reyes del Nuevo Milenio". The audience greeted him positively, as did the critics, who reacted favorably to the guys' creativity.

Seeing the demand for their own music, young people began recording new songs. In the period from 2001 to 2004 they released 3 more discs: "De Nuevos a Viejos", "Mi Vida ... My Life" and "De Otra Manera". Each of them had big sales and received gold status.

In 2004, fans of the guys were surprised in the form of two separate solo discs "El Sobreviviente Wisin" and "Quien Contra Mi Yandel", many regarded this as the termination of joint activities. But in fact it was an experiment, it ended in failure because sales were small.

This story was quickly forgotten, and soon the guys started recording new tracks. They were doing so well that in 2005 they decided to open their own label called WY Records. And immediately the album "Pa'l Mundo" was released on it, which became the most successful work of the musicians. The songs quickly spread throughout different countries, they were heard in Japan, China and some European countries. Also, this disc hit the top of the Latin American Billboard chart and was awarded gold by the RIAA.
