Laurent Chevallier

After studying at the Louis Lumière School, Laurent Chevallier became a camera assistant on many feature films, collaborating in particular with René Allio (Retour à Marseille, 1980) and Jean-Jacques Beineix (Diva, 1981). He was then a cameraman and, from 1986, director of photography on films such as La Vengeance du serpent à plumes (Gérard Oury, 1984) and Les Spécialistes (Patrice Leconte, 1985). He spent time directing for television documentaries on different regions of the world.

Passionate about the mountains, Laurent Chevallier made Jean-Louis Étienne's crossing of Antarctica the subject of his first feature-length documentary, Au sud du sud, produced in 1990. The documentary on Africa Djembefola followed, the feature film film L 'Enfant noir (1995), filmed in Guinea, and another documentary Circus Baobab (2000). In 2002, L 'Enfant noir was chosen to be part of the "College and Cinema" operation, and on this occasion, Chevallier brought the main actor of the film, Baba Camara, to France to present the film to the students. This trip is filmed, and becomes a documentary, Voyage au pays des peaux blancs.

In 2003, he wrote the feature film La Vie sans Brahim, which presents the life of a native of Morocco who comes to take over the grocery store in a small village in Essonne. Brahim is a homeless man that Mostafa will try to socialize. Always focusing his work on the African continent, Chevallier directs Momo le doyen, a documentary on the king of African jazz, who told Americans "jazz was born in you, but I brought it home, in Africa, because it is from there that its source sprang ". In his feature film The African Experience in 2009, the musicians of the Guinean group Fôlifö introduce students from a college in the Gers to jazz played with traditional African instruments, then take them to Conakry (Guinea) to show them the roots of this music. Two years later, with La Pépinière du Desert, the filmmaker retraces the story of a Moroccan peasant and an immigrant living in Essonne, who decide to grow trees in the desert.
